[#3036572]

Just fitted a an x9 10sp rear mech (probably last years) along with a 36-12 cassette. Shifting is fine. Only problem is that with the chain off and the mech near the top of the cassette, the cage makes contact with the cassette. Not good.

I've fiddled with the B tension screw but can't adjust it so that there is enough of a gap.

Any ideas?

If it's last years mech it's not 10 speed...

Here it is...

Has 10 speed written on it so definitely is 10 speed, probably from earlier this year.

Bit worried about running it as I'm sure the mech would bury itself into the cassette if the chain came off.

Short cage, not compatible with 36t?

It's a medium cage and works fine with the chain on, mech still has a little bit to go with the chain on 36/36, and is fine on 22/12. It's only with the chain off that it has a problem. And then it starts to rub on the cassette from about the middle sprocket up.

I thought It should be around 5 / 6mm away from the top/bottom sprockets when under chain tension.
If thats the case and works when the chain is on surely it is correct?

Agreed, who cares what it does with no chain on, if it works with the chain on just ride it!

Well the top pulley is about the right distance from the cassette, it's the bottom pulley that touches the cassette.

This is fine until the chain drops off on a ride and the cage buries itself into the cassette in a shower of carbon fibre shards ๐Ÿ™‚

Got a picture now that shows the issue...

Maybe it's just the way it is but I can't remember it being like this on any of the other bikes I've built.

Oh, so it's the bottom of the cage, not the jockey wheel, I assumed you meant the cage near the top jockey was fouling the cassette.

There's no adjustment you can make there, that'll be fine, even if you drop the chain it won't matter, it's not going to go into the spokes, and the cassette won't be rotating with any force if you've dropped the chain.

I can't say I've ever even checked if there's clearance there with no chain on, just ride it.

Thanks njee20, did think that the cassette would just stop rotating so might be ok.

Noticed it by chance really as I usually put the chain on in the small sprocket then sort out the indexing. I happened to pop the chain off to clean it with the mech in the sort of position shown and noticed it was fouling the cassette.

Thats fine - it won't cause a problem.

Put it this way - I have the same combination, at the Mega this year I had to go chainless about 1/3 of the way down - the mech was being buzzed by the cassette in that position all the way down, for the best part of 25k. It's still fine.

Yes it should, as long as your freehub's working alright, it sounds like Hob Nobs wasn't, and it was still ok!

Cool. Thanks all.

Guess as long as I'm not travelling backwards it will be ok ๐Ÿ™‚

You would be correct - due to the prior crash causing the resulting somewhat not ideal situation!
