    Bit of background:
I asked locally if anyone had a road bike they would mot mind parting with for use on turbo trainer. I was offered one and was told no payment was required. Took a nice bottle of wine as a thankyou.
Got it home and whilst giving it a quick once over started noticing Full Campagnolo groupset and wheels, seatpin and so on. Frame is lugged and has a Reynolds 531 sticker but no manufacturer. I am thinking the guy has either done me a big favour or himself a big dis-service.
Will post some pics pre cleaning.

Can anyone advise on what it might be and also alleviate my nagging guilt?

    Could be all sorts.
Be easier with pictures, which I see are coming soon.

Crossed rear triangle under the seat = GT.
    1990s I’d guess.
STI came in (on bikes for sale) around 95, so early 90’s.

Has it got gear shifters on the downtube and brake cables that exit the levers at the top and arc over the bars? If it has and the frame is in decent condition with minimal rust, it could be a candidate for restoration to ride in Eroica events and therefore worth a lot of money.

My advice fwiw, is not to do what someone did to me a few years ago.
They came on here pleading poverty asking for a donation of a bike to get to work. I’d a road bike that I’d ridden the LEJOG on but had no intentions to use again as the road was not my cup of tea. I met up with him and gave him the bike. A few weeks later he came on here bragging that he’d stripped the bike and sold the Campag groupset on ebay. He got a bit of a flaming and it left a bad taste with me.
If it is a hidden gem, I’d be inclined to recompense the previous owner somehow.
Edit. Didnt see your pics until I’d written my post, doh.

piston- that is why i am posting. The only thing i wanted was something to go on the turbo trainer. Worried that it might be a bit of retro porn.

If it’s steel, I think it’s a GT Course. Made in the US I think. There’s also an alloy road frame. Sometime in the 90’s, pre death of Richard Long, anyway.

If you’re really keen to know it’s provenance, Retro Bike is your best bet. GT weren’t the only makers of frames eith the triple triangle design but anything else could be quite niche.

    Not in 531.

I’d put money on it being an Orrell, he used a triple triangle quite a lot.

531 isn’t that special and that doesn’t look like a particularly high end group set. Not trying to diss your new bike just pointing it out so you don’t feel like you have mugged the guy. Its a nice bike and a good find from a generous owner but not high end

Hmm, just had a look on google, looks like I was wrong about it being a GT, the Courses used the pierced top tube design, not lugs, for the seat post-toptube junction. Thought it was a question I actually knew the answer to 😆

Well, What ever it is. After a clean up and checkover it is going on the turbo trainer.
Knowing nothing about road bikes I just wanted to make sure I was not going to be sweating all over some classic.

Nice old bike worth around £150-£200 or thereabouts.. Looks like it’s had repaint at some time(531 decal has “renovated” on it ?

Ideal turbo bike try not to rust it with sweat though 🙁

Make a very comfy winter bike if a little heavy 8)
