did you plug it into the same usb port today as you used yesterday?

you sure you were lookign at the external drive when you verified the stuff had been copied over?

personally, I'd be lookign to keep anythign I didn't want to lose on two, separate, drives rather than relying on one (internal or external).

Maybe it is crashing whilst trying to regenerate the previews.

Can't send links as posting from my phone but maybe that'll give you somewhere to start looking for an answer

Try also going to file-open from within media player or vlc and seeing if you can access the files from there

have you got another pc/laptop/mates machine you could use to look at it?

the samsung – 80gb for films isn't going to make much of a dent and will be a bit of a faff to set up – probably need jumper changes plus sides off pc etc. and then you need to make sure it's got the 'right' interface for your pc.

Your main problem probably is Windows, not Western Digital.

Download and install linux instead. Ubuntu is a good place to start.

Fstab is pretty easy once you're on the learning curve.

I've had a drive do that before when i pulled the usb lead out before it had been 'safely removed' User error by me

shut the pc down and reboot

before you open the drive chage the folder view settings to details or list so it doesnt try and load thumbnails. might help

If you're really stuck you can download a Ubuntu .iso and burn to Cd. Then boot from the cd, and copy the files from your new hard drive back to you old one.

    It'll work because it's linux.

    No trolling here, no sir.
