Got a 800MB AVCHD file that I want to compress to something more maneagable for upload to Vimeo.

    Any suggestions?

I *think* handbrake supports AVCHD. It’s a very good encoder. Output to mp4 in h264 video and AAC or MP3 audio.

    Thanks retro!

Handbrake has done the job nicely – converted to mp4 and still pretty good HD quality.

I’ll need to play around with the settings to get greater compression, but it’s a good start.

MPEG Streamclip is also great if you’re after something a little more esoteric than Handbrake will do for you.
