There used to be a great bit on keith bontragers website about how to do this, but i cant find it any more.
How do you do it again with a bit of gear cable so you can adjust the chainline on the rear mech.

Use the limit screws to alter the chain line ,you dont need cable.

i found the screws never wound in enough to do this so i used a cable. i used the cable end that normally sits in the shifter in the barrel adjuster of the rear mech, and pulled it through with the enough tension to have the right line over the sprocket. you can tweak it with the barrel adjuster too if you're slightly out...

Do you tension the cable so the mech sits in its normal position.

If you use the spacers from two old cassettes it is easy to do as you can put the sprocket anywhere you like until the chain line is correct and some old mechs will work without cable ,my mate did it.

you tension it so it sits about where you need it to then fine tune.

the way i did it was to push the mech (jockey wheels) so it's lined up with the sprocket, then pull the cable through tight and clamp it in with the pinch bolt. loosen or tighten the barrel adjuster to get it lined up perfectly.

I'm doing it with a single speed specific rear wheel , so i cant adjust the chainline with spacers.
