AVG has just told me I’ve got “Trojan horse Generic 20.AGMP”. I had this when it scanned the other day, and thought I’d removed it then. It’s back again, so what can I do?

I’ve googled it, but there are no intelligible / trustworthy answers out there.

Remove it again, change porn sites.

No porn involved. Would another anti-virus program do it, or is it more than that?

Yeah, right! That’s not what my Remote Desktop Manager is telling me… 😉

For starters, get MBAM from http://www.malwarebytes.org, and run it. Save a log.

You can certainly try another antivirus program, it sometimes works. MSE is usually quite good. It can be a bit random which one works at any time.

I managed to get a rootkit virus on my netbook. Both Kaspersky and Malwarebytes seemed to remove it but failed. I downloaded and ran combofix which seemed to do the trick. Bit of googling suggests you shouldn’t run combofix without guidance but I had no other pc access.

Hitman will get rid of it.

    Turn of system restore though.

Is it their seeming ability to access horrific, depraved, and virus-riddled porn websites with impunity that makes Apples so popular? Next time I hear another person singing their praise I will think twice. 😛

I’ve not heard of hitman, which unnerves me. What’s that, then?

Rootkits are evil. There’s worse now too, crap that lives in filter drivers and the like. Horrible stuff to get rid of.

Be careful of Combofix. It’s very effective in certain circumstances, and potentially catastrophic in others. I’d head the advice they give with it and seek ‘professional’ help rather than recommending it as a magic bullet. That’s what MBAM is for – once you’re run a MBAM scan, you’ve dented the infection (if not cleaned it) and you’ve got a logfile which someone with experience can use to progress the patient.

Modern malware isn’t like the viruses of old; it’s sneaky and pervasive, and getting rid is a black art. Doubly so when you don’t have direct access to the box.

Hitman is highly recommended on the security forum so no worry there.

    Hitman Pro – not free

You might need help from MBAM forum to get that nasty out …

Lol at elfin. FWIW, I don’t access the depraved porn sites, I just look for the pictures in google images, no viruses there. And they don’t need a credit card. 😉
