  • Trails in Pembrokeshire National Park???

    Hi Guys,

I’m off this weekend to camp with some friends near Cardigan, Pembrokeshire. I’m pretty sure that Brechfa is the nearest Trail Centre, but are there any a closer to the coast, or decent trails in the National Park there? Can’t seem to find much on MTB Wales.

Thanks for your help in advance!

    Cheers

    The classic answers are:

    1. Preselli hills
    2. Take a road bike; or
    3. Learn to surf

But being at that end, another option would stuff around Machynlleth bit of a schlep though even from Cardigan.

So I take it the answer is…. not much! ???

Pretty much, the coast path isn’t even a realistic cheeky proposition because its too busy with too many stiles.
Plenty of things to do off the bike though.

We were there last week (St David’s) and the weather was fantastic – have fun.

Also, the coast is truly fantastic, so i’d forego a moderate mtb ride for one weekend to enjoy the coast. Certainly don’t drive too far to get to a trail centre, especially on those roads at Easter time!

    Thanks guys,

Well it’s our first weekend with our new campervan so we want an adventure. We usually head up North Wales though. Does it get really busy around Cardigan way at Easter? We were at Brecha last summer and there was literally no-one around! Seeing as we are in the van are there quiet spots to get away from the tourists? Any recommendations for camping spots?

Think of Pembrokeshire as the Cornwall of Wales, it’s very different to the rest of Wales, and being a National Park it will be busy. The coast road from North to South will be quite busy I imagine. Pembrokeshire is really all about the coastline (the National Park is UK’s only Coast park), so stay somewhere as close to the sea as possible and enjoy what that has to offer. You can sea kayak, go coasteering etc. You’ll still find some quite spots, but not as quiet as Brechfa and surrounding area!

It will be busy, but not like Cornwall on a bank holiday. I’m not really familiar with the Cardigan area, but the area around Newport is nice.
If you could be tempted further south, there are a couple of spots worth stopping at.

    1. Abereiddy Beach – https://goo.gl/maps/Dd6X9 you can cheeky camp on the car park here and walk across to the Sloop Inn at Porth Gain. It’s where they do the red bull cliff diving (http://www.redbullcliffdiving.com/en_GB/video/video-red-bull-cliff-diving-pembrokeshire) but is quiet the rest of the year.

    2. Porthclais Farm Campsite http://porthclais-farm-campsite.co.uk is going to be the quietest around St Davids – very old school, field and toilet block, but stunning views and direct access to the coast path.

If you get bored, you can learn to surf or go coasteering with these guys – http://www.tyf.com

    Have fun

Even in the height of summer its nowhere near as busy as Cornwall.

Get a wetsuit, get to the coast and do some bodyboarding!

    +1

You can hire both at Whitesands (http://www.visitpembrokeshire.com/explore-pembrokeshire/beaches/whitesands/)

I should have qualified – it’s geographically like the cornwall of Wales, and looks similar in places. Def use a wetsuit, the water is bloody freezing!

Carningli near newport has some xc rides. Get up early and go ride the coast path. I live in south pembs so not so familiar with the cheeky riding in the N.

geoffj, the car park at Abereiddy is more or less non existant now as it was destroyed in the January storms.

I was there last week, and whilst the retaining wall has gone – removed rather than washed away, and there are huge boulders and blocks of concrete towards near where the toilets are, the car park is still usable with plenty of space. There were a couple of camper vans parked up for the night too.

geoffj, it was more of a heads up if you hadnt seen it as although there is still room, its alot smaller than it used to be. The slipway is interesting now!
