New role means I’ve got to use a MacBook. Never had any Apple stuff and struggling with the Mac vs my dinosaur Windows desk … just using basic stuff (ppt, xl, internet, Thunderbird) … any tips / recos to help me get going?

Spend a bit of time learing the Apple short cuts for force quit, force empty trash, toggling between windows and how things like spaces work. It will make life a bit easier in the long run.

Go to iTunes and search for Mac Quick Tips. Loads of podcasts of no more than 2 mins in duration which really helped me get started with Mac ownership a few years ago.

think there is a whole section on the apple website for people just like you

and yes spaces is well worth getting the hang of if you like to run lots of applications at the same time
