A guy came in the shop with a full on aero time trial bike…

    …with a compact chainset WTF?

It was a brand new Planet X. Is this what happens when people buy without advice?

It’s always struck me as being a bit strange that any TT / Tri bikes would come specced with compact chainsets but I’ve seen plenty :-/

i did a 46 mile mountain time trial on Sunday. I was begging for a compact. one of the guys in the top 5 told me he’d have a compact fitted for it next year…

maybe he has a double and a compact chainset???

Maybe he built it up with spare bits

or can’t lay down the powwah like you, al

(I’m way faster down steepish hills just tucking up rather than trying to pedal (on my road bike) so I’m not sure a 53+ would be any use to me either)

at least he wasn’t on a triple though, hey ?

Not All time trials are on the flat. I used to ride the hard riders series and a compact would have been fine for some of those.

I’ve ridden hilly TTs, 39-23 did me ok on Witchey Knowe.

Triples make more sense to me (I ride one) – seems compacts are for the vain.

We do good business with compacts on those as Tri bikes.
    They like the cadence.

Triple works ok for Andy Wilkinson…

must say, for the majority of chubby middle aged amateurs, 52 or 53 /39 and/or close ratio cassettes are for the vain

Having had those in the past, it’s a compact with a wideish range cassette that suits me – I’m never going to pedal when I’m above 35mph so a pro chainset is wasted on me and I like a moderate “jump” between cogs (saves me having to double-shift)

lazy – if I was going to ride for 12 or 24hrs I’d be on a mtb triple

🙂 he uses it for everything, his reasoning is for most riding his on the 42, steep hills the 30 and the 52 for TT
