Hot on the heels of Gisburn looking to get upgraded visitors facilities (i.e. toilets, better parking etc., by the way the planning application was approved just need a big chunk of cash now), Lee Quarry has decided to follow suit.

There’s a feasibility study currently being undertaken with a view to recommending what facilities are needed in Future’s Park at the start of the trails.

The usual things are being considered as per Gisburn but also other possibilites such as a bike shop, showers, indoor pump track etc.

As with all these sorts of reports they need evidence of what people want to back up their recommendations. So could you take 5 mins or less to fill in their online survey.

I’ll be posting more info on http://www.pmba.org.uk as and when I have it.

    Cheers

Done. I allways thought that Lee Quarry was a prime location of VC / Bike shop.

Done too. The place is crying out for a decent car park, and at a minimum, a visitor centre with cafe and bogs.

Bump for those who didn’t see it yesterday. Any chance of a sticky again?

Can/could the area sustain a VC/bikeshop? I ask due to the fact that some of the 7Stanes cafe/shop only open a few days and weekends during the winter which lasted the best part of 6mths this year 🙁
Given all the moaning and groaning on this site re cost of coffee/cake/bacon rolls/fixing a puncture/oiling a chain would the area be attractive to an “investor” ?

We had a very nice lady come round on site, Saturday at Lee quarry, so quite a few of us have done this.

Just done, good luck with this, i also added that better signage from the main road would help and also rubbish bins up by the pump track etc (haven’t been up for a while so there may be bins now).

I allways thought that Lee Quarry was a prime location of VC / Bike shop.

alledgedly only 4 cars went there one day last week, the cafe opposite got so much weekend trade it now shuts on a Saturday

and also rubbish bins up by the pump track etc (haven’t been up for a while so there may be bins now).

wtf? if you can up there you can carry it down, bins will cost to empty, money that will be better used towards providing toilets. At the moment the Lancs CC rangers act as litter picking fairies scouping up the rubbish that people on bikes think it’s appropriate to discard there.

don’t forget the overhead of running a indoor pump track (either the worlds best or worst idea for the site)

a VC will mean two local businesses having to look hard at relocating to it or going head to head with whoever does

big_n_daft – calm yourself with your wtf’s for just a moment, i can’t stand people who can’t be arsed taking home there rubbish, especially given the fact that it’s even lighter than when they brought it there. However, i’ve seen at many riding spots (Rogate and Chicksands are 2 examples that i’ve visited recently) that a few strategically placed bins can prevent an area looking like a rubbish dump and it doesn’t take a genius when looking at the rubbish to figure out where it has come from. A few morons can give the majority of us riders a bad reputation dropping there litter.
Just an idea, sorry if it offended you, i wasn’t suggesting wheelie bins scattered all over the quarry and a big money contract with Biffa.

    That’s the problem, they don’t.
xherbivorex (from here) saw one lad throw his redbull can out of the car window in the carpark. When politely asked to pick it up, he refused.
I’m guessing that he and his group of 7 mates wouldn’t think anything of throwing everything they brought up to trails, on the trails 🙄

The problem (or beauty) with Lee is that the weather is pretty wild for a lot of the year. Whilst it’s been fairly busy lately with the warm and dry weather, it’s generally pretty quiet. Facilities are provided when events are on and apart from those times I’ve never had a problem parking. Toilets wouldn’t be such an issue if the public loos on route weren’t closed.

There is a (selfish) part of me that doesn’t want it to get too busy and commercialised too.

I must admit I’m torn between upgrading facilities and not. Personally I don’t need them, I live 10 minutes ride from Futures Park. However whether you like it or not more and more people are looking for a one stop shop riding destination which does include the whistles and bells. A visitors centre can sort of bump up the credibility of the trails for some people.

There’s also the regeneration angle to think of, Bacup could do with any investment that’s going. Plus there’s a number of us who like to see all mountain biking in the Lancs Pennines and beyond expeand. The more high profile places like Lee Quarry become the more the councils become amenable to other developements and improved access. Councils and councillors always love to be associated with a success story.

Either way the surveys there in part ot gather people’s views, if a VC etc. isn’t what you want your free to indicate that on the survey. Just remember though that investment attracts investment. Upgrade facilities now may actually help to speed up the developments in the other quarries 😉

and not in the bin if one arrives hence it’s pointlessness (not to mention the wind, the foxes, etc etc)

the toilets aren’t really for the mtb’ers they are to get rid of the nuisance of people urinating/ defecating in the bushes in an area where formerly their kids were safe to play

happy locals watch out for the scrotes who smashed someones window one evening, lose local support and it won’t be a one-off

Hi SJ, based in the valley also, so for me it would not be a draw, however as a focal point defiantly.

The viability of what will be a commercial venture depends on a lot of things, such as type of premises, who builds it and or provides the infrastructure, length of lease, type of operating licence and length of the lease.

Also some reliable numbers reflecting both footfall and wheel count will be important outside the 4 great events we have there every year so far.

I’ve just filled the survey in.

I’ve only been up to Lee Quarry once (less than a year after it opened). It was a great place – we drove over after spending the morning at Stainburn.

Would love to live closer to a facility like this to be honest; 150 miles each way means it’s not somewhere i can often visit.

For me the riding comes first. It can have the best visitor centre/car park/toilets/showers etc in the world, but I wouldn’t visit a trail centre twice if the riding was below par.
