OH is getting a ship’s decanter for christmas (she mentioned she liked them) and we’ll be polishing off christmas dinner with a cheeseboard, so i thought some port might be a neat way to finish the feast and christen the present, so with a budget of around £10-£20 what’s good and what’s not in port?

Any taylors or tawny in that price range should see you right.

    tawny

Must be Ruby. Must be LBV. Must be old. Must be served with stinky cheese.

If you’re anywhere near an Aldi they have an LBV for £10 at the moment. It is bloody good as well, not vintage Port good but for a tenner it is spot on.

ok, plase excuse my ignorance, but can i have a basic guide to “tawny”, “ruby” and “lbv”
cheese will be strong, prob not stinky (old amsterdam, black bomber, decent brie)

    “tell me about port”

I would do but I can never remember what happened after I drink it.

Yeha, you might get a bottle of Graham’s, Taylor’s or Fonseca LBV for under £20. Won’t be very old though but should still be good if a little bitey.

OP there is good advice about decanting here if it helps:

For value, I rate Warre’s Otima

Otima is good value, but it’s a tawny which may not be what you want for a traditional port n cheese affair (though it will go with cheese, it’ll be sweeter and less tannic)

    How about this vintage port?

Does blow the budget by a few quid, but will be very nice. Otherwise, Grahams LBV is cheap and reasonable.

I like Ferreira port – never had a bad bottle. Seemed to be what the Portuguese people I met recommended.
