How much did it cost? Did it work? Any problems?

I have just had a large molar removed that was crowned a few years ago. I had an excrutiating abscess two weeks ago and after spending a small fortune on various treatments on the tooth a few years ago, I decided it was time to cut my losses and have the rotten bastard heaved out!

It took two different dentists an hour and twenty minutes to get it out. Lots of cracking and crunching, bad smells, drilling and grinding and lots of pulling and poking. Man that was extreme and despite repeated injections, it hurt like mad!!! I was shaking like a leaf for an hour afterwards! Now the jaw is slowly on the mend thankfully.

Not wishing to mess up the adjacent teeth with bridges, i am thinking about a titanium peg screwed into the jaw, followed by a pocelain crown when the implant has settled in. I actually need two of these now and I simply don't trust the advice my dentists have given me. I think they are a bit gung ho about excessive drilling and I believe this is the sole reason why I lost these two teeth. (the other tooth cracked in half after my former dentist recommended removing an old metal filling and replacing it with a white one, despite there being no apparent problem with it).

It will be a few months at least before I can have this done, but has anyone got any recommendations?

Should I consider going abroad for this treatment?

I have very hooked roots and it was impossible to treat one of them without an apisectomy. If you are relatively normal, it should be fine. 😆

The dentist will have a very thin drill and will work their way deeper into the root, periodically stopping to take x-rays to see how far down they are getting.

It wasn't painful or that unpleasant, well nothing compared to having an extraction, or an abscess.

implants will probably cost around £1000 – £1500 per implant including ceramic work. You could maybe get them done cheaper abroad, but unless implants are done by a dentist who has been on a good training course and has quite a bit of experience with them then there is a higher risk of failure.

If you end up having problems with them once you are back in the UK it would then be a case of removing the implants or finding a dentist in the UK willing to try and provide corrective treatment (not always possible)

If they are done by a good dentist who's been on a decent training course, and you have good oral hygiene and decent bone depth + density then implants are very successful. Although more expensive than a bridge, they usually last significantly longer so although the initial cost is higher, over the actual lifespan of the implant it will nearly always out cheaper per year of function than a bridge.

i am currently going through the procedure. I am having one of my front tooth done. This tooth was crowned over 20 years ago following a poorly executed jump on a BMX. A couple of years ago i knocked it at work and the post snapped in my jaw/root. My dentist was unable to remove the post so the root had to come out.
As the teeth either side were in go order my dentist recommended an implant over a bridge, so i have been lucky to get the work done on the NHS.
In february i had a piece of bone removed from the back of my jaw and screwed to the area where the implant will go as the bone had receded alittle. I am now waiting for the next stage which will be to fit the implant.
I dont know how it could be much cheaper abroad as there is a bit of waiting time inbetween each of the procedures while it bonds together

I have a huge distrust of dentists.

At the moment I'm having to have an implant repaired (the crown only).
The specialist dentist that performed the titanium implant itself was an expert with years of experience. however my own dentist ( at the time) fitted the finished crown. My gum fell off within 2 weeks and the crown was too big. All this at a cost of £2,000.
I am now having to have treatment back at the implant dentist, at a cost of £800, to sort out my gum and fitting a new crown. He said in all the 15 years he's been performing these proceedures he's never seen anything like it. He also said it ahould have been him that did the full treatment from taking the old tooth out, to preparing the gums and fitting the crown as well as performing the titanium screw.

It turns out the dentist who originally fitted the crown, didn't check my gums for suitability and start to toughen them up and it sounds like he scrimped money on getting me a cheap crown which was the wrong size and colour match. I have no come back on all this bad work as he has now been struck off.

So please search around for someone with years of experience and as with so much in life ' you get what you pay for'.

Cool though having the ti screw in the jaw bone!

    Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Seems like I need to bite the bullet (groan) and stay local for this, using someone with a reputation and long track record.

I have a few months to do some research.

    Cheers!

Spongebob if you're in the Northwest, I can recommend the specialist who fitted my implant ( performed the operation ).

I knocked a front tooth out years ago, and finally got around to getting an implant + crown a year or two back. Was a couple of operations as the bone had receded a bit and so first op was to take some bone from the jaw to add onto the hole, then second op (6 months later) was to implant the titanium screw. All went fine, was sore for about 4 days after each operation, but now it is all wizz bang and I am really glad I had it done.

Being able to smile without worrying about your smile looking bad is worth a lot!!
