This is the only time-trial stage of this edition. The route will wind its way through the streets of Bordeaux for fifteen kilometres, with avenues and buildings to shelter the riders. Then suddenly, they will leave the city and arrive in the open countryside, amidst the vineyards, because they will be passing through the famous landmarks of the Haut Médoc wine-making region, such as Margaux, passing one château after another. The finish is magnificent. On the face of it, this time trial will merely fine-tune the classifications; there is no way the seventeenth-placed rider will grab first place.
Great tour shaping up, Contador has real competition. Would be interesting to hear what the intentions of Sky tactics were. Keeping the pace high on the penultimate climb maybe helped that group stay together so long without any crazy accelerations on the last. Could have been a good tactic if they had the legs to see it through.
Basso & Menchov (If he can stay on his bike) will be strong in the rest of the mountains. Contador and Schleck are in league of their own. Taxi for Armstrong or will he be able to magically 'recover' on the rest day?
I'll be watching my man Kreuziger. I mentioned him before the Tour started, young and his year has been going the right way so far. Very interested to see if this is it or whether he has more?
