I've gone and got a puncture in my commuter bike, and went out and bought a new repair kit.

It's got those patches with a bit of orange rubber on them, they look like this ->

I take it the black bit goes on the tube leaving an orange backing?

While I'm at it can anyone recommend good puncture resistant 700×28 tyres

I can't see your picture but if you're describing what I think you're describing you've got a feather edged patch?

In which case you peel off the tin-foil backing (trying not to get finger prints on the patch) and press this against the tube, the clear plastic outer gets peeled off, from the centre outwards once the patch is in place. You're then left with a black patch with an orange circle around it.

    Hope that makes sense.
