I saw this happen to a big old oak tree when I was aged 8 at boarding school, the tree was about 100 yards from the school so when the lightning struck the thunderclap was simultaneous and everybody pooped themselves. Next morning we all went out for a look; the lightning had boiled the sap and blown the bark cleanly off, it was scattered for about 100 feet around the tree in small pieces.
