Can you buy an axle to bolt two square taper crank arms on to so that they can be used in an external bottom bracket. Is it a Stupid idea?

eh? I’m trying to picture this? Basically welding a square axel to to chainset, then filling out the space left where a round one would go?

Why in gods name would you want to?

It’s an original stupid idea, if that helps at all.

Why would you want an external BB? There are some advantages but arguably more to square taper.

Why not just buy a Shimano un54?

In all honesty I cannot tell the difference other than that my pedals do not spin freely with the external BB and they wear out much sooner. On the plus side they’re a bit lighter.

+1 gingerss. Shimano UN54 will often outlast the frames on which they’re used and cost beer money to replace if they fail.
