  • Speedplay Pedal Allen Key Removal – 8mm wrong size?

Tried to fit some speedplay’s to my road bike this evening. None of my 8mm Allen keys would go cleanly into the Allen key hole on the spindle. Dug out the old pedal spanner, but kind of irritated because don’t normally travel with one when I’m touring.

Is this right? It seems almost to be an imperial sized hole. Or perhaps the spindles have been painted over zealously? Google didn’t help me out.

I have always used a pedal spanner on my Zero stainless pedals. I didn’t think there was an Allen key fitting on these. Which ones are you using?

I’d hazard a guess that since the pedals are American origin, they may indeed be an imperial allen key size

My Speedplay Frog pedals use one metric and one imperial bearing!

8mm in the back of my old cro-mo Zero’s.
