    I'm tired and probably being thick also ..but how does one separate the rubber/plastic section from the aluminium section of the shifter in order to put a new one in ?

    Rohloff shifter I presume? – There's a circlip inside ( opp end to cables )- Remove circlip & shifter rubber slides off.
