So, where should i pop the question?

I've been with my girlfriend for nearly 4 years, we've lived together for 18 months and both have 2 kids from previous relationships that get on great together. I know she is ready to take the next step and after many months of getting my head straight im ready to get married again. So Saturday made excuses not to spend time with her and got the ex to take my kids and went and got the ring. I have 3 options for 'The Place'

1) We are planning a 3 day weekend at The Carrick in Loch Lomond end March. But we have the kids with us 2 nights.
2) I have pencilled in a walk up Conic Hill this Sunday as i was keen to do it with Loch Lomond in the background in some way as anyone whos spend time there will agree its one of the most scenic places in the UK. The weather looks like it will be crisp dry and a scattering of white.
3) We had a 4 day break to Cyprus planned but has now been pushed back to September, this was my original plan.

Problem is, i want to do it now! But where and when? Should i wait for sunny Cyprus? or a few months till our weekend away or just take the ring up Conic Hill and see if it feels right.

I asked Mrs North in the kitchen of our flat. Not romatic in the conventional (i.e. as determined by women) sense, but did the trick. Well, up to a point -we're still not married..!

Make an effort, for sure, but try not to contrive it too much. If one of the places that you have selected has a particular significance for both of you, that is the one.

Remember, you're not writing a film script - you're asking your lady to marry you..!

It did it in bed, but in toast. I carefully cut out each of the letters to "Marry Me?" in wholemeal and took it on a tray with a glass of champers and the ring upstairs to her.

Beaten only by a farmer mate of mine who cut out the words "Marry Me Cathy?" into the crops on one of his fields, and then took his missus up in a plane to see the message from above.

(Says the man who planned to pop the question on a local hill but ended up doing so on the local cycle path in order to avoid an argument about commitment?!)

I did it on MSN messenger.

It's not where you say it that's important, it's whether or not you love each other. Nor is it important how much you spend on the ring, or whether or not you have horses at the wedding or whether the flower girls dresses match the flower petals or any of that crap. If your potential Mrs thinks it is then watch out...!

I did it after i rolled off her after making love on a weekend away, i then produced a ring from the bedside drawer and it fitted perfect

I was super smug that day, i borrowed one of her old ring for size 2 weeks before.

Well some real romantics on here. Why not just point her at this thread?

I say DO contrive it. It is something you will only do once (hopefully), one of the biggest and most momentous decisions of your life and will be a story you will tell for the rest of it.

It doesn't have to be a grand gesture. You don't need to scrawl "Marry Me" in your own blood and faeces or anything. Just put a little thought into it to make it special (as you seem to be doing).

Either 1 or 2 but then I am biased as I proposed at the top of Ben Nevis on a clear day, it really was spectacular.

You can be "financially bound" quite easily without being married. (e.g. shared mortgage, bills etc)

"legally bound" is a bit woolly. On the one hand a marriage "contract" is remarkably easy to exit, on the other hand some aspects of law still recognise "common law wife/husband".

Having spent several years convincing Mrs 83 I was wholly against marriage, I took her to Paris for the weekend and one evening sat her in a quiet park with full view of the Eiffel Tower. On the hour they put on loads of twinkly lights all over the tower, and at that moment I got down on one knee and busted out the bling.

Cheesy as hell, but it worked She even managed to squeeze out a couple of tears (of happiness I hope)

Oh, and I'd go with 2

Then getting married is pretty meaningless. On the one hand you could say getting married shows committment, but it doesn't really as it's easy to get out of. On the other side you could say being married means people tend to stay together even when it isn't working out, just because they're stuck there.

I'd say telling someone you are in love with them, living together and wanting to spend time together shows commitment in the here and now...

....getting married shows faith that you genuinely believe it's gonna go the distance.

So if you don't need to know the other person really believes it's gonna work out either because a) you don't think it will either (and let's be honest, it's difficult not to be cynical about relationships) or b) because you genuinely don't care about the future and 'take life as it comes' then you don't need to get married.

Well, unless you are religious I guess.

I supprised her after 12 years while on holiday at the Taj Mahal she was sat on the 'Diana Seat' getting her photo taken
proper cheesy and nearly got arrested but worth the effort
she was really supprised

I'd say option 3, pick a nice quite spot up on Mt Troodos 'The home of the Gods'

I always thought so. We were together for around 12 years before we finally got hitched.
She always said she didn't mind either, but seeing how happy it made her, I'm very glad we did it and I think it made our relationship stronger

Yeah, I too would go for the hill option. Sounds lovely.

Plus the OP sounds so excited he might burst before either of the other 2 dates come around. LOL.

Go for Conic Hill, assuming its just the two of you.

A simple proposal in a beautiful place (if she loves the outdoors too). Of course if it's a popular tourist spot you may well have to wait for some privacy (I spent half the day waiting for a 'no audience' moment but it was worth it.

The added bonus is that you get to spend the rest of the day together without the distraction of Tv/radio/washing up/children etc.

We didn't get the ring until after but we were in South Africa at the time so had the option of getting something custom made to her tastes.

I would also got for the local hill, again assuming some privacy is available!

A friend of mine proposed by putting the ring into the mug bit of his (now) wife's thermos.

That's really weird! - Not the story itself, just the similarity to the story I was going to tell. Significant difference though. A friend at work is half french, and his lady and he are in Paris every now and then. He's very bright, but slightly scatty and scruffy. She'd been dropping marraige hints for a year or so.

Same situation as you, they went for a walk, ended up near the Eiffel Tower at around dusk, he got down on one knee and at that moment, the lights went on, shooting up the tower. He tied his shoelace and stood up. Tears in her eyes and a big slap in the face for him "You will never get a better time to propose to me than that!" and stormed off.

They're engaged now.

Number 2 the hill sounds ace! Make sure you post the response and how it goes once you've done it!!! Take some Haribos and give her a sweet ring that's what a friend of mine did on primose hill, london!!!
