I heard an odd clonking sound from the back of my bike yesterday, and on inspection found all the sprockets on the cassette were moving individually:

I can only suppose one or more of the connecting rivets has sheared, but I've never seen this before

Looks like it is alive and getting revenge on all cyclists.
Or he's been riding so fast and created some sort of paradox Star Trek style...

now you are stretching credulity!

In technical bike shop parlance it's known as "knackered" (or variations on that word).

Surely the 'teeth' on the inside of each sprocket connecting the the freebub means they can't move relative to one another and the connecting rivets are just to keep it in one lump when putting on/taking off the casette to/from the freebub?

yes, I'd tentatively reached the same conclusion myself
I was worried that the steel sprockets would have chewed up the alloy splines on the freehub, but they're not too badly damaged...

I think there was slightly less mutual rotation when the cassette was on the hub, but obviously the fit between the splines and the sprocket channels is not exact.

i make my own cassets (well the ratio's) and i dont use rivets but have never had this problem!!
i waould get a new one TBH

I've had this before but the cassettes had screw in fasteners rather than rivets so I could just tighten them up. Not so easy to do with rivetted cassettes. I'd send it back, if it's not too worn, and you may get a replacement.
I've had a cassette break before (XT with 4 arm spyder) and it was warranteed with no problem.

That cassette should have a tiny allen key bolt on the back, it's 1.5mm, check to see if you can tighten it a touch, there is only one oddly enough which is probably why they always come loose. Either that or get a small hammer and tap the rivets from the top to flatten them, should stop the play.
BTW that cassette is almost worn out anyway.

WOW.... loving the moving picture.
New cassette, or a new hold pin. that you can screw in and out etc, should hold all of them in place.
Looks worn so you might as well replace it ....
