For six months I have now been tortured with it – never had it before until the age of 40 – had some of the symptoms whilst I had a heavy cold but now I have a constant need to blow my nose, a heavy feeling in the area and a regular head ache associated with it. Attending my GP he told me further to the necessary tests that it can be a bugger to clear. Over the period I have had 4 courses of antibiotics and in addition steroids which caused me to having the feeling of alien in my gullet. Am getting desperate now as it appeared to nearly disappear but now it has come back with full avengance. Am willing to try anything within reality accupuncture etc.
PLEASE HELP ME REALLY AFFECTING ME AND MY RIDING!!!!!

Sympathies, I know how miserable it can be. Ask your GP for a sinus wash-out perhaps?

Bowl, boiling water, olbas oil and a towel on your head can provide temporary relief. Nothing to add on a proper solution unfortunately.

Sudafed helped me, but I presume your doc suggested that.

Have been constantly washing it with a combination of olbus oil and saline and it does work but it does not kill the bugger as it keeps coming back

Can only use sudafed for a short, limited time….

Did you persevere with the steroids for long? Typically they need 2-3 months to have an effect….

In most cases, antibiotics aren’t indicated, and won’t really help – they only help if signs of infected sinuses…

Having suffered the same over last few years I have tried: antibiotics-some help but never solved the problem, apple cider vinegar with a dash of water. 2-3 times a day seemed to help symptoms and help prevent recurrence. Also need to cut back on dairy products. But looking wider mine was related to stress at work and I found reflexology really helpful. Also increased vitamin c intake. I have also started taking colloidal silver which is a natural antibiotic, you can only buy it online. Hope that’s a bit useful.

“sniff, don’t blow” pretty much made mine go away

my wife’s not a big fan of the principle though 😳

My concern was the steroids were giving unpleasant symptoms I have never had before-constantly swallowing to clear my gullet thinking I had swallowed a pigeon!!!!!

no blowing your nose hard – I find ‘snorting’ out one nostril at a time, footballer style, in the morning shower helps with my eustation tubes, but I don’t have sinusitis.

You need to go to specialist to sort it out asap the longer you wait the more damage it will be. Once it becomes permanent that’s it.

You may just have to live with it as there is no permanent cure I am afraid.

I have mine since late teens and since then I have never had a day with out block nose of some sort. I was told that the muscle has weaken so no chance of it getting better. You may be told to go for simple operation but then if you do that there is a danger that you will loss all sense of taste or smell and there is no 100% guarantee that the problem can be cured if you undergo operation.

Avoid nasal spray if you can because the withdrawal symptom is much worst. i.e. you nose will be so blocked you feel like there is no more oxygen for you to breath. Use it only in the very worst situation.

My son had a few sinus wash-outs but this was some time ago. When that failed he had them permanently drained. He was under an ENT consultant.

I would insist on being referred to an ENT consultant.

The suggestion about avoiding dairy products is a good one.

Hope you get some relief soon.

I had two years where I really suffered, the first year I had several courses of antibiotics. The second it just wouldn’t shift, I saw an ent specialist and he said it may be hayfever related (never had it before)

I started taking antihistamines and it did eventually clear. That was 10 years ago and I have taken antihistamines when I get a bit sniffly at the beginning of the year and it hasnt rroubled me much since.

However this year it came on horribly and ive had two lots on antibiotics already -caught me before the tree pollen usually gets me, I have started the antihistamines now and it seems to be settling the symptoms and keeping it at bay with the steam inhalations.

    Menthol crystals/towel/steam ?

Not trying to knock you but I know two friends who have had ops to remove the infected tissue from their sinuses and both say the pain is much worse post op however they both suffered for a long time before surgery.

As mentioned time is the key, get yourself to an ENT consultant.

Is it possibly being caused by an allergy? have you introduced anything into your life in the last six months that you have not before?
I had an issue with eczema recently that was being cause by something that I had newly started to eat.

I had similar years ago, was prescribed a steroid nasal spray – topical nature reduced steroid side effects. After 2wks really noticed a difference, able to breathe easy again, no sinus pains, no blowing nose all the time. After 6months weaned off this and never had a problem since. Didn’t ever get to the bottom of the cause but the spray did the trick. I didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms as mentioned above either

Beconase is the only thing that works for me …
Takes a week to clear out the sinuses but seems to keep `em clear with a squirt a day.

Hope this helps, bloody awful affliction.

Paid for online allergy test and followed religiously for two months at same time as steroids in an effort to remove the affliction.
    Still off the dairies.
It came back to me when I stopped the antibiotics.

Don’t over use over the counter sprays etc as they restrict the passage over time, as I was told by my doc.

If you have been prescribed sprays take them regular like clockwork every day.

Hade the same problem for years

A good hot chilly can help also.

Steroids and antibiotics are two completely different animals …

Never used antibiotics – short term fix
Steroids are seen as a longer term solution – like i said, works for me and having tried most nasal steroids nothing else comes close.

The past year has been very similar for me. Headaches were daily for a while and pretty unbearable with bleeding.
it turned out to be heavily worsened by an allergy to a mould infestation we discovered in our bedroom. But the main problem was that my sinuses were not draining so I just had surgery to widen the drainage channels. And we moved house.
I am now much better. So consider allergy maybe. And best of luck as I feel your pain.

as strange as this sounds I had Sinusitus for at least 4 months back and forth to the doctors, then had my 6 month dental check where it was discovered I had a cracked tooth and needed root canal treatment, within days all the Sinusitus symptoms had disappeared ! dentist said this can be quite normal to have said symptoms. I joke you not this is true !

I have had sinusitis for 12 years, terrible headaches around the eyes every single day for the first 10 years.
Probably caused by mould in a damp flat, never cleared up.
    Steroids and anti-histamines didn’t work.
I take aspirin & paracetamol every day just to function.
Waited 4 years for operation, had holes in my skull drilled wider and nose broken.
Horrible operation and it didn’t even help. ENT consultant said the NHS had done all they could, shook my hand and wished me luck.
Had to give up my job as a video editor as too painful staring at screens all day. Haven’t been able to find a decent job since then (2007)
It also ruined 12 year relationship with love of my life as I was like a zombie most of the time.
It basically had a good go at ruining my life and mental health as there seemed to be no answer or end to the pain.

The sinus cavities around your eyes are comparatively small and even a slight amount of swelling can cause lots of pain.
Rain and damp were a big problem for me, possibly pressure related. Also dust mites can cause swelling and pain.
I have avoided milk & cheese for years but in the last 2 years I have reduced my pain by about 50% and it’s made life bearable.
Two things have really made a huge difference for me.
The first is Bromelain, this is a natural pineapple enzyme tablet that really minimizes my inflammation.
I get mine from Holland & barret, try it, it definitely works for me.
The other thing that has also helped is stopping eating bread. Wheat can cause excess mucous for some people.
A tiny reduction in swelling can cause a noticeable reduction in pain.
I can now function reasonably normally but my life has been hugely affected by this chronic condition.
Good luck and hope some of these things work for you.

I have suffered daily but tend to cope with it but some days the blockage can be very severe.

For example, if I sleep with my head to one side then that particular side of the nasal passage will block vice versa, and if I sleep facing straight up then both nasal passages will block and I would be unable to breath at all. I normally ended up using my mouth to breath. Also one side of my nasal passage is constantly blocked throughout the day … one the worst day it feels like suffocation.

Stop blowing your nose – the pressure blasts mucus up into your sinuses. Wash your face and let the warm water loosen dried mucus then gently blow out into a loosely-held tissue.

I had problems with sinusitus for years, eventualy had surgery to open them up,i remember when i was suffering i was told not to use any nasel type sprays, as they can make things worse and cause re infection so if you are using them perhaps you could try nocking them on the head?

snort otravine(SP) and use the steam room every day helps ease it, try and resist blowing as it inflames the area making it worse and just try and let it pass. it can be bacterial or fungal I think or a result of a damaged area in the nose all of which could require medical intervention. I feel your pain – had it 3 times now for shorter periods (up to 2 months) and it ruins sleep motivation health and work for me… on the plus side when I finally clear it and blow it through I have the most amazing blow and show to impress people with 🙂

use the type of steamer that girlies use for cleaning out face pores
with olbas oil in – a few times a day – helps get the tubes wide open and reduces possibility of reinfection

I suffer from this condition quite badly and know how debilitating it can be.

The headaches wear you down and tire you out, my eyes feel heavy and my head feels swollen above the eyes all day every day (near enough), if I put pressure on the area I can actually feel the mucus and it shifts it about a bit. Yuk!

It got so bad that I stopped cycling for a bit as it was so hard to get enough oxygen into my lungs when climbing.. I just felt like I was suffocating. However, I can play Ice Hockey no problem! Weird.

I got an operation to clear the nasal polops and it worked great for a few months, then they came back and I have suffered for over about 16 months again. I do nasal douching once or twice a day. Get 500ml of water and add a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of bi-carbonate of soda, get a 20ml syringe and fill it with the solution, tilt your head back slightly and squirt the solution up each nostril and let the remaining fluid drain naturally from your nose before gently blowing it. I usually do it in the shower as the heat also helps to shift it.

I have a nasal spray from the docs (flixonase aqueous nasal spray), this helps with my allergies which are dust mites and outside dust from quarries etc (really handy as I work in quarries most days), I also steam my head with Olbas oil (2 drops max or it will blow our head off), this helps for a while but it soon returns. I use Otravine metered nasal spray which really helps.. But only for short periods!

Have been back and forward to docs and feel they just try to fob me off with anti-biotics… Which don’t work as my sinusitis is chronic not acute! Or other way round.. I can never remember.. But it’s the one that is there all the time.

It really effects my everyday life (I know people are worse off than me, but you deal with what you have), if I’m having a bad day with it I have zero motivation and I’m quite short tempered.. Which I hate because I’m usually a very patient person. It tires me out and feels like I have a head cold and a stinking hangover pretty much every day! I have also started to get migraines and double vision.. Got my eyes tested and I have glasses for driving now but still have the severe headaches and double visin with it.

I really feel for you mate, it is a really pain in the ass to live with. But hopefully some of the above info will help.

Try Exomuc. It’s a French medicine that contains an ingredient that is not licenced in the UK, but seems to really help my wife.

Don’t go on a tinpot internal flight in South Africa when they de-pressurise the cabin rapidly!

I thought my sinuses were going to blow my forehead out 😥
