So I have nearly finished the build, the only thing left to do is fitting the chain. It's got standard drop outs, so I have bought a tensioner and a half link. So just wondered what the general view is, do I try and do it without the tensioner, or go tensioner with chain as tight as possible, or do I need some slack inorder to get the back wheel out.

    thanks…

I'd say tensioner, anything else on a standard dropout frame is a short-term measure. In my experience, magic ratios don't stay that way for long.

tensioner and get the chain as tight as you can (unless its too tight).

so whats the standard for removing a rear wheel on a SS then?

If you have a tensioner, a QR and vertical dropouts, it is no more difficult to remove the rear wheel than if you had a derailleur. Had no problems in the time I had a tensioner for a cheap commuter singlespeed.
