I seem to getting through bmx type freewheels on my single speed about every 8 months, but have never worn out a mtb 9 speed freewheel (i’ve done more miles my geared bike). Do most people run standard 9 speed hubs on a single speed for increased lifespan of the freewheel?
Could it be that i should invest in better quality bmx freewheels as usually buy a cheap ACS or Dicta ones for under a tenner?

The cheapo ones are crap. Shimano ones are at least sealed a bit better.

I’ve killed Shimano and White Industry freewheels. I have yet to even have to set spanner to my converted geared hub. I use that on the On One that’s ridden off road all weathers.

White ind are best by a mile and rebuildable
Everything else should be viewed as disposable
Acs is my favourite cheap freewheel.

Hope trials/SS hub here – best of both worlds (regular freewheel and no dish)

I’ve alsways had 9 speed forinterchangablity of bits.
Got 60,000+ miles from a Deore before it gave up, around 15,000 from XT (still working) and now using a 5,000 mile Hope XC-Ti (eats bearings but easily changed)

I now use a hope s/s hub on xc 717 rims
Shame that they weigh more than my old DMR hub with a white Industries freewheel on 717 rims 🙄
