Is “portion” really the answer to “Large fish” – I’m still failing to get that even with all the clues. Maybe I’m missing the cultural bit.

    No, it isn’t!

Large fish. Take away from a chippy.

    Special 🙂

Might be a regional thing (Yorkshire)!!!

woof is close but only half way. It’s a proper crossword clue with two ways to get the answer, not a quiz type clue.

    Edit: Glenn’s got it

Gegs and HIJKLMNO are pretty well known clues for their simple brilliance. As soon as I saw the thread title I was expecting it to contain those clues, and if not then I was going to post them.

your clue is its a proper noun so capitalised

Capitalised has a meaning that will make you go DOH when you get it It is a capital [letter] to start to be clear but it has more than one meaning here.

I only got it because i had some letters in it I dont think i would have got it from the clue alone

It’s a bit too straight an answer TBH

Capitalised has a meaning that will make you go DOH when you get it It is a capital [letter] to start to be clear but it has more than one meaning here.

Is the “capitalised” bit part of the original clue then?

no but i dont think it can be got without it[ as i said i had letters] – it [capital] has a double meaning in the sentence work out the other and you will have it… hopefully

Couldn’t remember the good one I had last weekend so while trying remind myself I stumbled across these:

    Number of fingers (9)
    Bar of soap (6,6)
Flightless bird, found in Iceland (6, 7)

And a couple of minimalist ones:
    O (8, 6)
    (1, 6, 3, 1, 4)

Edit, just seen the last one has been done but I’ll leave it in as I missed it earlier

    That’s the easy one 😉

Bar of soap is quite a good one IMO, its a different meaning for both words and readily accessible to non crossworders. Number of fingers is a bit more lateral, different meaning (sort of) of one word
