Following on from the ‘bridges’ thread the other week. Does anybody pass any interesting ruins on their local ride?

I’ll start off. Ruined church at Sutton Verny (Wylye valley, Wilts)

    I live opposite this

Not too sure if a persevered ruin of a chimney stack counts as interesting though 🙂

Only old lumps of industrial archaeology round here (although there are apparently some Bronze Age cairns in the woods too but I haven’t found them yet).

Across the River from me, Queen Victoria Country Park, an ex War Hospital, can be seen from Southampton Water..

    And Knowle Hospital.
This was one of those Hospitals that unmarried Mothers went to when deemed “unsuitable for Marriage” Rumour has it 1500 or so graves are buried in the field below the old hospital, most have no name plaques and a lot has been desecrated by Fareham BC in their move to turn the old Hospital into a new housing development. Theres a meeting once a year to remember all those Women who were interned there and never left.. Very Sad.

That chimney stack must be interesting judging by the number of onlookers!

@bikebouy – I assume you know the story of Netley, the wounded troops where unloaded there so that when the boats docked in Southampton the families there saw only healthy returning soldiers.

The best ruin on my local rides would have been the old cabin/shed after which the trail Deliverence was named on Leith Hill. It’s collapsed now so just a pile of wood and corrugated metal.

Just up the road from Reeth behind Calver hill, taken from the climb up towards Melbecks / Great Pinseat. If I was a better boy scout I’d be able to work out the grid reference!

    Can I have this?

It’s from about 1890, very well constructed, apparently worth building rather than an incline over a small rise.
