It can be a bit rough and tumble on here but if you stick around you get used to it.
Perhaps new users get put off when they get a sharp reply to their threads. Could new forum users have a visual "L plate" for the first couple of months so that they get treated gently?
They could put an "L" go in their display name until they get used to us.

Brilliant idea in my opinion. 
Loads of forums have ranks, based on number of posting, but all that really matter is "are the new?" and a simple L-plate would be a great way to do that.

No, there are nice folk on and some nasty folks too-just like real world.

I though about that: We don't bully learner drivers do we? If there was a consensus to treat L posters gently, then it would be our duty to rough-up anyone bullying them.
This forum is largely free of the boring flame-wars you get on others. Better calibre of people on here IMO.

but what if the bully had L plates? It could get messy.
why should anyone need treated gently? treat everyone consistently and if you're a c0ck it will soon become clear to them. I can't think of anything worse than people "being gentle" on me on a new forum then reverting back to complete c**t mode after a few days.

we're not driving though, we are on the internet where people can be anonymous and be as nasty as they want without comeback
As a newbie myself I would add that there are occasions where it can be intimidating joining a new forum.
I find this is particualrly true when there is a plethora of erudite posters , sharp wit, (as opposed to mindless abuse), and barbed sarcasm that both tickles the ribs whilst cutting to the quick
