So, um, how hard is it to stop swearing?

Do you think it would reduce stress?

I don’t mean just using other words in the same way though, like “flip”, or such. I did it once, years ago, and I seem to remember it calmed me down.

    Any thoughts? (not sweary ones)

I don’t find it difficult not to swear in shops. I find shops very stressful, can’t see swearing changing that.

For me, it’s not “stopping swearing” that’s important, it’s recognising that I’m building up frustrations that mean that I’m likely to swear.

The only thing you can control is how you react to things that are out of your control. Or some such vague hippy-ism.

Ultimately, a lot of swearing is a symptom of frustrated and angry patterns of thought. You can train yourself not to fall into those patterns. And that does help.

I don’t think swearing is swearing for some people, it’s punctuation, much like an ‘ummmm’ or ‘errr’ between words, an unconscious gap-filler.

I quite often ask guests if they’d like a cup of f****** tea.

But yes, I try not to swear in Debenhams.

What you need is a swear filter, it simply translates your foul potty mouth to a dribble of spit

    Some good responses!

    Interesting stuff.

I’ll try the vague hippy-ism and consider the other input, including a vow of silence 😉
