Student kitchen my arse! Since when does a student keep a kitchen that tidy & drink twinings tea, your giving students a bad name.
Nice bike though!I would change the tyres because they are crap.

Well planned on going for 26/36 but they wouldn't fit on my XTR cranks, so left my original 22 on, and swapped the original 32 with a 36 and haven't used the 22 at all... I suppose Ideally a 38 - 26 or 28 would be the best but it's cheeper and lighter to go 1x9!

weights from weightweenies:
44t ring: 80g
22t ring: 20g
sram front shifter: 252g
LX front mech: 170g
e13 ring is 15g lighter than XT 32t
30g for housing and cable567g

I havent found it very limiting so far: 36x11 is approx 44x13
So all the folk in 44:11 are going to be going faster than you then...

Replace the shiters with XO gripshifters and you'll get your front mech and 26t inner for free (in terms of weight anyway).

You're right there Chris, I just found a big ring help smouth out the rough going but its probably just perception.
I guess for Gorrick style courses 1 chain ring would be fine.
Good luck with your season..:)Posted 2 years ago # -
Sorry Daffy, I forgot to add that in to my calculation; the MRP is about 58g (claimed weight, I havent weighed it) so its just over 500g. I wouldnt even consider putting gripshift on my bike, cant stand it! but then both of my training partners swear by it so its down to the individual. My last years bike was a specialized epic which weighed in about 26lbs all together, so I dont think a few grams here and there is going to be felt by me at least.
Generally I'm pretty happy with how the bike is riding. Its taken me a bit of time to get the forks how I want them - a lot harder to set up than the F100's I had before, but I do like the handlebar lock out. Its not going to be great riding all day, or even for racing marathons, but thats not what its aimed for. I've got a lovely trail bike for the big days out too.Posted 2 years ago # -

And £250 RRP!

That looks ace! Estimated weight should be in the region of "silly light".
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yeah, but a quick check suggests that X.9 ones only are 260g/pair, so that's another 125g you can take off the weight saving for going 1x9!

Should be fine for the Gorrick racing, as the only real steep ups are short enough to run up - except the long hill at the Enduro (up to where 'The Wife' starts), I can't get up there in anything other than a granny/34 combo...
Not sure my legs spin enough though to be able loose the big ring.

I ran 11-34 with a 34t front for ages, but I find the jump between gears too much for me when I am really trying and looking to get the next gear, 11-36 is even more of a jump.
I have swapped back to a tripple and am going to experiment with closer ratio cassettes next purchase is an 11-28, I rekon on that being my ideal, and a great close ratio spread using a std tripple up front.
Posted 2 years ago # -
The problem I found with running a close ratio cassette is the need to shift on the front the whole time, and the associated time lost.
Most Gorrick courses don't need anything smaller than a 36, there's never anything that steep, even the Wall as used in the Enduro isn't that bad, it comes back to the 'quicker to run' thing.
I still think something like a 28/40 2x9 with an 11-34 cassette covers the best range. I couldn't do a single ring personally, you've gotta have some strong legs/be used to low cadence climbing!

i ran duo for a couple years on 29:42 - with 11:34 - did all but 1 SXC in the 42 - the one sxc i did need the 29 for i really needed a 22 - it was like riding up a cliff face that round !
gone back to triple for XC racing - SS for endurance - 1x9 does appeal but i think id end up chopping and changing too much

I think thats the key, you gotta be really on it fitness wise to pull off a 1x9, and 11-34/36) cassettes.
I have'nt tried the close ratio as yet, still on 11-34, I might well find the same as you, but it will be a case of whats the best compromise for me. If I actually had more time to go riding am sure it would make more difference than any gear setup.
ps that Scott looks flippin ace.

I think it's about riding style as well, look as what SSers ride up on 2:1, 34/34 you're looking at 1:1, but I'd much rather be able to ride at a nice tempo rather than be mashing a huge gear at 30rpm.
It's becoming increasingly popular in the higher echelons of competition though, for some courses like Sherwood I can definitely see the point, but then I wonder if I wouldn't rather have a larger option so you're not constantly at the bottom of the block. For me, it's one area where the c200g weight saving would make me slower.

Was that the Contin one Terry?
This is so tempting. Need to get to Ae and scope it out.
Posted 2 years ago # -
know nothing of the course at the moment though
You're going to want more than one chainring.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm very tempted by 1x9 this year too, but I use my granny ring a lot more than the average racer (my legs are awfully spinny). I think it makes a lot of sense for most racers, not sure if I'm fit enough but I'm going to try it on my normal bikes first.

jcrompton- we were at Ae yesterday and I'll go way out and say it's the worst trail centre I've ever ridden. Not done Moray, but it's worse than the welsh ones by some margin. I'm glad they're not doing it on the XC course there!
