Have we done this? A masterful moral panic in the making. Give a teenager a device with the capability to take a picture of boobies, willies or hairy axe-wounds, and the capability to send those pictures to 200 of their closest friends. Marvel, when all uses of this technology are not particularly helpful or well-thought-out.

    The BBC is concerned:

Some 45% of teenagers who had received explicit content said it had come from another teenager, and 23% said it was from their boyfriend or girlfriend.

    The Daily Mail is near-hysterical:

'Everyone makes porn – more people than you would expect,' an articulate sixth-former told me matter-of-factly, before describing how her 17-year-old friend had photographed herself.

The Grauniad's pet liberal kid reckons it's all very complicated:

Young people's sexuality, like new technology, has the potential to deliver great and enriching experiences if practised responsibly. Both of them can help us learn about ourselves and others, develop as human beings and express ourselves.

I love the fact that alongside the story in the Mail about stopping young people having sex and enjoying it, you can find pictures of J-Lo's bottom…Presumably for the enjoyment of those getting less sex than teenagers…

    Bless.

ahhh the best bit though was in the BBC's piece which helpfully points out that it's an offence to take pictures of a young teenager's naughty bits. So if you're a young teenager, photgraphing your own naughty bits makes you a SEX OFFENDER

Eeh, when I were a lad, we had to draw our own pictures of naughty bits.
Youth of today, they're just soft.

(or hard, depending on the picture in question…..)

    Note to self…

when getting the daughter a mobile for her birthday make sure there's no camera on it.

I assumed that this is what mobile phone cameras where for? You're never going to take a nice landscape pic on a phone cam then send it your friend are you? No you're going to send them a picture of a friend drunk or that girls arse that you slept with or your own turds whatever takes your fancy at the time.

Also I am sure most people have sent something rude or a bit blue to girlfriend/boyfriend why the hell not!

TBH I'm amazed it took the papers this long to get worked up about it, how long have phones come with cameras for now…Must have taken, ohhh all of about 30 seconds to work out what you could get up too with one…

    why the hell not!

Well, apart from the nonce aspect of all of this inevitably ending up somewhere on the interweb, there's also the personal aspect of it getting on the interweb.

There's many a person out there who've had their "private" photos blasted in to the electronic ether from whence they cannot be removed. Is it a good prospect to think of having to forever live with the knowledge that someone, somewhere is fwapping one out over a picture of you?

Anyone else think that a lot of papers that run these morality scare stories also deliberately include a few pictures (usually in the fashion section) that your frustrated Victorian Dad type can bash one out over?

Well, I know a couple of women who "modelled" in the 70's, whose pictures are presumably all around the world, and they're not particularly wound up about it…once it's normalised, there's nothing much to worry about so long as your name isn't associated with the image. We all make mistakes.

It's a well known fact that if you tell a teenager that something is wrong and a crime, they will never, ever consider doing it Simon.

I do wonder, with the easy availability of pron on the interweb these days, if the expectations of teenagers are being ratcheted up to a point from which they will only experience disappointment when the real thing happens.

Disturbingly enough, I did hear some teenage girl vox pops on the radio where they were saying how shocked they were at some of the things their boyfriends expected them to do.

EDIT: I know that's slightly off topic, but I can remember having similar levels of obsession with girls/pretty teachers/friend's good looking moms when I was young, but I didn't have the wherewithal to see it all being down on a "homemade" streaming video website. I just had to make it up in my head.

Good point, Darcy. Back in the halcyon days of finding a sun faded copy of Mayfair in a hedgerow, one's expectations were set to a little bit of frilly underwear action and a nice hairy beaver. Nowadays, with all that interbongo, expectations will be set to all manner of depravity.

That seems to be the really interesting thing. This is almost like getting naked with somebody, except that the awkward moment of juvenile vulnerability turns into something where firstly, you pretend you are modelling because all the boys you know watch masses of porn and know what they like, and secondly it creates a permanent, portable record of how embarassing it all was just waiting to be forwarded to dozens of people.

CF: not the type of modelling these women were doing. Did I ever tell you I worked in a dirty bookshop in Soho, before the days of videos?

I read a thing relatively recently (can't source it I'm afraid) about a study someone had done which involved getting a lot of relatively sexually inexperienced men to have sex with a woman (who was paid for the study). Virtually all of them insisted on ejaculating on her face. The author reckoned that there was no way everyone was convinced this was a good idea even 5 years ago.

here is my favorite bit of tabloid hypocrisy

its the daily star slagging off the brass eye paedophile special whilst simultaneously running a picture of underage charlote churches breasts

there are times when i think people who read a tabloid (including the mail/express) shouldnt be allowed to breed!

a sun faded copy of Mayfair in a hedgerow

I've finally come to terms with the fact that I found a copy of Knave under my mum and dad's bed. I don't know who was more embarrassed when they found it in my bedroom. My dad did the thing that most Irish dads did when they were embarrassed over something vaguely sexual, he gave me a hiding to get it out of his system. This stuff was illegal in Ireland when I was growing up, a proper pron mag, especially if there was pink on view, whatever about the involvement of wood, was the equivalent of having a pallet of 501s in Moscow.

*sigh* How I wish such technology had been available when I were a lad. Although, I did once get a rather nice pic of a naked girlfriend lying in bed with nice moody light. Only the one, mind, 'cos she heard the camera shutter…
Not for nothing was a Polaroid camera called the Swinger. 😉

Perhaps the solution is to deluge today's teenagers with images of Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker, in a bid to reassure them that they can be asexual yet interesting? 🙂

    BigDummy

I saw Jarvis Cocker recently. Hordes of girls who couldn't possibly have been old enough to see Pulp first time around were pretty convinced that they were in the presence of a sex god. One hurled a bra at him. 🙂

    MrAgreeable

They were clearly being ironic. 🙂

Edit: More worryingly, I've been trying to think of female counterpart for Morrisey et al who is just as well known, but I'm drawing a bit of a blank. 😕

I think this is more worrying than anything else

Virtually all of them insisted on ejaculating on her face.[\quote]

Nothing wrong (IMHO) with porn per se but I do think there is a whole generation of pre-sex teen boys getting some very weird ideas of what normal sexual behaviour is. The other worrying bit is that a lot of porn seems to make women subservient,I don't buy into the whole porn automatically demeans women crap, but the sort of thing BD has highlighted is pretty wrong.

There was a program on BBC2 / channel 4 (can't remember which) recently which highlighted a lot of these issues, the girls had some pretty mixed up ideas as well. I think the only thing that is likely to counter this is proper sex and relationship education in school. However much the Mail readers want to ban all porn it isn't going to happen, the genie is well and truly out (of the bottle).

Hedgerow porn, now that takes me back to before the tinterweb….

No there isn't. There are some boys growing up like this, as there always have been. Not an entire generation…

As I have often said, it's time to resurrect the tradition of byway bongo, footpath filth.

Go, go to your stash, I tell you! Spread the stash around the byways and footpaths of this green and pronless land, make a difference!

Alright, that was a massive exaggeration, but I think a lot more teenage boys will have easy access to full on hardcore compared to my generation where the worst the majority of were exposed to was a bit of top shelf centrefold.
