“Security” QR skewers? Allen key type replacements? Preferably anodised red to match my Hope hubs. Any recommendations?

    Thanks muchly.

I bought a pair of royal racing ones ages ago and were spot on. I want another set but cant find anywhere selling them.

So they deter thieves but do they give you more torque & so a stiffer ride?

Does anyone make some ACTUAL security skewers? E.g. in the same way that alloy wheels have a locking wheel nut, you wouldnt be able to use a 5mm allen key but you’d need something along the lines of a ‘special’ key.

EDIT: a quick search answered my question.

There’s a fair few variations on the above about. Some have ‘keyed’ QR arms, others just odd sized/shaped tighteners.

pinheads are more like car stuff i.e. unique tool..

those zefal ones only work if you can stop the bike being turned upside down – which if you bike is locked up correctly should not be an issue and good design as no key to loose

Thanks guys. I now recall the Halo ones. Google doesn’t help when you can’t remember the thing your searching for. 🙄

I’m not sure about a stiffer ride, but the Halo ones I use have stopped a creak from the back axle, so maybe.

sounds like you had crap quick releases then.

quality shimano enclosed cam design – im adament youll get more clamping force on them than you will out of a soft 5mm allen key bolt – its possible to strip the thread out the nut part of the QR with a cammed lever – youll round out the allen key bolt before you strip the thread….

the allen key ones donw’t work. I had some at uni and they were knicked. The wheels were locked to the frame so they didn’t run off with those, but my nice blue anodised ones were taken – ironically they looked nice and were obviously very knicable – moreso than the bike they were fitted to.

My Roadrat came with quick release scewers where the lever unscrews which seem better to me for the opportunist theif who is carrying an allen key around with them. Though the oppurtunist theif that is carrying an M4 bolt with them will be laughing.

The best thing to do is to keep your normal QR skewers and lock the wheels to your frame, if its security you want./

Firstly, because a surprisingly high number of QR skewer owners don’t actually know how tight they should be:

    In comparison a hex skewer:

Apologies for the condescending tone, I made these these two vids for an ignorant mod on another forum.
