    Well peeved off
This weekend landed on me butt and ruptured lower disc.
    How long to repair?

I suffered a prolapsed disc last year, after physio and treatment and 5 weeks off work, it was a full 6 months before I was comfortable enough to ride again 😯

Depends how bad and how well you respond to physio or even micro surgery.

(you actually fell on your butt?)

How old are you btw? just curious about disc injuries.

Are you getting electric shocks down your leg?

    Hope you recover quick.

About 5 months for me. Start researching core stability exercises but only start under physio supervision.

Ruptured mine in Aug 2008, incredibly painful, surgery in October 2008(Quote from Specialist "That's a stonker!)
Back on the bike by May 2009. I do Pilates core strength exercises and I'm now fine cycling.

Are you sure you have a prolapsed disc? It normally involved leg pain/ weakness/ numbness. If you do have one think in terms of months not days/weeks. Work on gluteal flexibility & core strength (swiss ball/ pilates, preferably taught, not from a book / DVD) in the meanwhile.
    Good luck

    Thanks guys for your replys.

Zaskar yep what happened was I came down a steep 40 ft approx descent
which then came into a series of 5 bomb holes.
I thought I was on the last Bomb hole but was not, and on the bomb hole
from last I came out at speed and the front wheel landed middle of the exit of the bomb hole, which launched the bike out of my hands and I landed on the bottom of my back side.

Now getting pains down the right leg due to the ruptured disc laying
on the nerve leading to the siatic nerve.
Luckily still working and no problem lifting heavy items
just the pain shooting down my right leg and a very tight
muscle in the back top part of my leg.

Awaiting MRI scan results to see what is needed.

If the disc is ruptured you could cause further damage by lifting heavy stuff so get some medical advice and take care.

If you can still work then you're doing OK. I couldn't sit at all and could only stand for a few minutes at a time,

Hi Kiril i know what you mean but I have no pain or
    discomfort whilst lifting
Just the pains in my bloody right leg.

You must of been going through hell mate.
Kiril how did you do yours?
Do you have to do pilates to coninue riding
How long was your recovery from surgery?

Grantway, i have no idea how I did it but it went in the states on holiday and getting back to the UK was "interesting". I have to do the core strength stuff in order to stop my back hurting but on the positive side I've lost weight as well.

The surgeon reckoned don't ride for 6 months, initially I thought psish posh, but he was right I tried and my body just couldn't do it. it then took me months to get my fitness back. My leg muscles had wasted away.

    just take care!

You're not doing yourself any favours by lifting heavy items. I never felt any pain in my back with my prolapsed disc it was all sciatic pain (the nerve running down back of leg). So just because you don't feel any back pain doesn't necessarily mean that lifting heavy stuff isn't making things worse.

Thanks for the info Kiril and glad to hear you can still ride mate.
Cheers Allthepies i understand but just trying to workout damage and understanding.
What did you have to do to sort the problem out?

I prolapsed a disc 3 yrs ago – killer sciatica (leg pain), numb powerless foot and a few months off riding. Can only just run again, but for the last 2 1/2 years riding has eased it (thank god).
Take it easy, but don't not try stuff – stay active.
All depends on location/degree of rupture.

I had a minor prolapsed disc last year in lower half of my back, it was a week before I could sleep comfortably, another week before I could sit down comfortably & probably a fortnight after that when it stopped hurting when stood up & moving around.
Was about another month til it went away completely & I was happy back on the bike.
My gp said that rest was the only way to help it in the immeditate few days after the injury, unlike the advice given for backache/pulled muscles, etc. – for 3days I couldn't even move from the bed!

Prolapsed disc can be verey uncomfortable, but like you having ruptured mine I would warn you that things can go to a whole new level. 18 years on and I sholud warn you that you may be in it for the long term!

In answer to your question, maybe never! If you're unlucky it can leave behind a weakness that may be prone to repeating the injury. Reduced disc space may also leave your facets being a bit tight.

Pilates, stretching, mobilising and hydrating will all help. And don't rush back! As if… But try swimming (front crawl only) or walking as alternatives to cycling if it aggrovates. Good luck 😉

    I'm suprised you're lifting-could cause more damage.

Wait for MRI before you do any exercise/lifting what might cause more probs and I would not lift stuff at work-which sucks as we need money to pay bills etc.

Unlucky buit hopefully you'll be back on bike soon-patience!

I had an even more minor ruptured disc 18 months ago. Went to the specialist, had the MRIs, etc. The specialist was mad keen on surgery and epidural injections; I wasn't keen on either, tbh.

Thing is, as far as I can make out, most of the pain and discomfort I had was from the muscles seizing up around the disc, from being tense most of hte time. The solution was lots of back exercises, things like the plank to build up abdominal strength and so on.
But I was on the bike again within a few weeks, and ran the marathon a year later, and now only really have discomfort if I haven't stretched my back for a few days.
I've spoken to a couple of people I know since then about their disc injuries, and it sounds like there really are levels of injury there; obviously I was lucky! Fingers crossed for you; it sounds like the bad ones leave you bedridden for weeks.
