Hi, my nephew has got hold of my XC bike to try it out and see if he likes the sport. He is based near Yarm in the NE and I want to find out where he can ride on trails suitable for a newbie aged 14 and also if there are any youth friendly clubs that you guys could recommend in the area.

    Cheers

Stockton wheelers is the local club, not sure how much mtb’ing their members are involved in though.

Offroad then there is a couple of MTB options.

Just missed the last of the Go Ride NE XC series

    Nutcracker next year too

An excellent little series with short grass based courses but in Scarborough. Final round in Dalby usually has a bit of singletrack too. http://richardsonscc.co.uk/ and https://www.facebook.com/pages/Scarborough-Go-Ride/569430343067740?fref=ts

CX season is starting and if you can get to them in the dry he’ll probably enjoy them more than the proper muddy ones.

Then the localish clubs might have something suitable. Most likely Hetton Hawks as they run MTB and CX racing in Hetton Lyons

League 2000 road in Middlesbrough again looks almost finished for the year

Also search the British Cycling calendar

    Also for local trails then
Preston Park has some fun stuff. (Eaglescliffe)
Can be linked into various other bits in Ingleby Barwick and Thornaby with some exploration and Strava use.

    In a car
    Hamsterley Forest
    Dalby Forest
    Guisborough Forest
    Boltby Forest
    Silton Forest
+ all the moors just need a map.

For waymarked for a newbie Hamsterley and Dalby would be best.

If parent also rides other options are available with riding with local groups.

    Hi John,
Im an MTB Leader at MTB Guisborough. During term times we tend to take the kids (11-16) out every Thursday night, 6-730 around Guisborough Forest. Over summer and through the winter we have a few weekend rides, some around Guisborough, but also some away days to Hamsterley and Dalby. We also have British Cycling coaches and do some skills sessions at the local school where we have a skills loop in development.
