Need one for the Cornwall jaunt next Saturday. New dog and cage has taken up a chunk of the boot. What’s good?

we have had a big halfords one for ages, basic but does the job.better if it hinged from either side, newer ones might? I usually add straps over the top for peace of mind on long trips.

We hired a Thule one from here, they brought it out and fitted it, and collected it when we returned.

Roofbox.co.uk and get a Kamei. Don’t even think of going to Halfords.

Have a look on local classifieds. We have bought 2 now. The first one is a big paddy hopkirk one that cost £20 and came with a roof rack for an escort. The second is a smaller halfords one that also cost £20 and came with a yaris roof rack.
I read somewhere ages ago that most roof boxes including some of the Thule range are all made by one manufacturer and branded up accordingly. certainly appears that way when you start looking round for them.

+1 for kamei. We have a 510 litre model. It has loads of space for 2 children, which leaves plenty of space in the car 😆 If you follow the link from uk campsite website, you can get 5% off from the roof box company.

We got a kami husky xl and very happy with it. Got it from roof box.co.uk on fairly short notice as we needed it for a trip to Scotland. As it only opens on one side it’s a bit of a fiddle to reach the far side fittings to the roofbars. The posher (more expensive ) ones open on both sides which could be a benefit if you are filling up on the roadside.
If you’ve got the time eBay is cheap as roofbars tend to be collection only so can be cheap.
I think a lot of the car manufacturer boxes are rebadged Thules.

Also a +1 for roofbox.co.uk and a kami. We got a dolphin long and narrow enough to get 1 bike pos. 2 on the roof at the same time. Also long enough to take big skis.

I bought one second hand, had always been a bit meh about them, but now I have one its awesome, makes loads of room in the car and is easy and simple to fit and use.
I bought a Volvo badged one, it’s a Thule in disguise, quick release locks inside make it a 5 minute job to fit.

Doesn’t affect fuel economy much and makes it comfortable to travel with the dogs and children.

Don’t know where OP is but we’ve used a place in Glasgow called Rattray motor spares for hiring roofboxes for holidays. Supply bars and even fit, proper old school service.

If you are in Sheffield I have a Thule that is no longer needed now our car is a camper van.

+1 for roofbox.co.uk. We bought a “used” Kamei Delphin roofbox from them at a substantial discount. The use it had had was to unpack it, stick it on a car and take pics of it.

Have a look at their sales / returns section.

We hired a Kamei roofbox a couple of years before we bought one, seemed a good idea if you’re using it very occasionally.

They’re way easier to fit if you buy one that opens both sides. I got a Thule 400 litre box for about £250 on Ebay. This one:

    Second hand.

We sold a big Thule (a both side opening one), having bought it second hand about 10 years ago for £20, on Gumtree for the same £20.
