I'm building up a commuter road bike. I'm proposing to fit a 10 speed 105 drivetrain but with an older 9 speed octalink 105 chainset (because they are stupidly cheap on CRC at the moment).

Googling around suggests that this will work OK, with perhaps only a small reduction in shifting performance.

Anyone got any real world experience of this set up?

It will be fine, I used to use a 9speed compact with a 10 speed set up with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks kingtut, that's what I hoped to hear.
