Now i know back in the day, when i was upgrading my MTB i was able to buy an XT rear mech and it work fine on my 8spd block. Does the same still stand true?
I've just bought a BNIB Carerra TDF for pennies. I know it's nothing special, but it will get me on the road and there wasn't a chance i could buy a half decent rear wheel for the price i picked this full bike up for. Looking to gradually change the groupset over time, mechs first, then cassette, then shifters etc etc.

I swap this sort of stuff around as the whim takes me, ignoring how many speeds its for and often make as well. It will work fine although quite possibly Shimano stuff is less cooperative.
Not quite sure what Matt means, the 'big 3' brands aren't interchangeable.
Shimano 8/9/10 speed road mechs are interchangeable. 10 speed MTB aren't. SRAM are unique, and 9 and 10 speed are different.
a 9 or 10sp shimano would work (road or mtb) but sram have a different pull ratio so won't. you could get a campag one to work if you had one spare - as long as you can get the max and min stops in the right place
however, I wouldn't bother upgrading the TDF drivetrain as the frame and wheels don't really warrant the upgrade, it's a fine bike as far as getting out on the road but not a featherweight flyer
