I have a set of Sony earphones, come with a small battery/reciever unit that clips to your shirt/pack strap etc. Pretty good unit and the battery lasts about 3.5hrs.
Don't use it much 'cos i have a set of Sony Walkman earphones now that have an inbuilt 2Mg memory and no wires - just clip on your head and go!

It comes with in ear phones but you can plug in whatever you like. Mine's a couple of years old now and been great.

^^^^^ is pretty much what i have. Decent bit of kit and has been reliable. I always find the weak link is the phone itself as you don't want to be using up battery power only to find it flat when you might REALLY need the phone!

Yeh they look like the sort of thing i was thinking of. know what you mean tho about the phone. With gps etc on the ride my phone eats its battery for fun. maybe chuck the mp3 player in the bag instead
