Anybody got any stories to tell on how quickly they got back riding again. Broke mine on Friday plaster on waiting to see specialist this week thinking of keeping the fitness level up on the trainer but wondering when light riding might be possible

not broken but badly sprained mine about 6 weeks ago, went out too soon, had a SPD moment and landed on it again, even more painful and longer recovery so don’t rush it.

Mine wasn’t back to what it was before for nearly a year to be honest but everyone’s different aren’t they…

When we went to ride Snowdon the other week, there was a lass at the bunkhouse we we using from Bristol mtb that was doing four days of riding at Cyb with a pot on her right wrist. Broken three weeks before apparently. I can’t comprehend how she managed it, but she did. I guess that shows what you can so with the right attitude.

Four weeks, but that was when I was 13 and I mended much quicker back then. Top tip: don’t pull your cast off to impress your mates when you get bored in double physics. Ouch.

Just follow Drs orders, you fall again on it you make it worse. Stay off your bike for a few weeks don’t be daft.

Snapped my radius three years ago and had it K wired. Wires and plaster was removed after six weeks and was on my road bike the following Saturday. Wouldn’t have been able to ride a mountain bike though as my wrist had zero movement in it. I had full mobility back after about three months.

I have broken wrists twice over the years and both times I carried on riding in casts, even won a 4x race in one :). Took things a little easy for a couple of weeks after having cast removed as they felt a little fragile without support of cast.

Almost straight away, strapped it up and rode away for several weeks even fell off on it again and the pain was incredible.

This was done on the advice from the minor injuries clinic that it was just bruised, 3 months later they decided that it was actually broken in four places and had started to heal on the piss.

Snapped my left radius playing footie (overhead kick on a 5 a side pitch) had it re-aligned in hospital, then 6 weeks in a pot and was told to not ride again for another 6 weeks! I thought the Doc was being overly cautious so went out after three weeks. A combination of showing off and a weak wrist sent me clean over the bars and in to a ditch, I knew in mid air that I was going to snap my wrist again. You know what I did better than that, I managed to squish all the new “softer” bone in the break together (it phecking hurt). Took 2hrs to get to my local A+E who were not at all pleased to see me with the same injury! (it was the same nurse who was a family friend)
My wrist has NEVER been the same since. It aches on cold days and clicks and grinds more often than I would like it too. Gentle exercise and get a power ball they do help!

    my wrist the first time..

nearly a year and two operations later still fubared

never, ever be the last person seen in a NHS fracture clinic

you should be re-Xrayed and a full cast applied this week, it it’s moved/ isn’t stable plating it then becomes an option. A lot easier to do now than later.

if they want to keep it in a back splint ask them why and insist on proper imobilisation

don’t be a hero and rush back onto the bike

    good luck

You didnt break it at cyb on friday afternoon did you?

We rode past a group and they thought one of them had broke his wrist not long from the start by the cafe.

You could ride a bike in plaster, especially a road bike with out too many problems. Just don’t fall off.

But – when you get a plaster cast taken off after 6 weeks your arm will be pretty rank, imagine if you had ridden 3 times a week and all the sweat and muck could not be washed off! It’s also not a nice feeling once you start sweating under a cast makes it itchy. That’s the reason I didn’t bother trying to ride when I broke mine last year.

Hairline fracture in both my wrists after riding into the back of a scaffolding lorry (my fault entirely, but the scaffolding sticking out the back that my head just missed could have finished me off in a big way).

Have to say 10yrs on I still have issues from time to time. After a couple of full on day’s mtb riding they blew up like balloons – massively painful. Much more so that when I actually broke them. Same symptoms after an unusually fluky long slogging cricket innings and a day using a jack hammer. In each case I spent the night with my arms in an ice bath worried that the inflammation was cutting off the circulation to my fingers. But then on hundreds of other occasions I’ve had no issues at all so it comes as a surprise every time.

They’ve but it in the back splint and the fracture clinic visit is Wednesday fingers crossed a year out sounds very serious point taken

I did my scaphoid and trapezoid bones on 30.10.09 and was in plaster for eight weeks. Like a fool I thought that would be it and I’d be back riding within a week but I seriously underestimated the physio required to repair the soft tissue damage and didn’t ride at all till March 2010 and it was May before I got back on my mountain bike! I’m currently injured again (unrelated) but was still feeling pain after a longer ride right up until recently…

It was Fairfield that screwed my wrist up due to their negligence/ cba attitude at the end of a clinic

    good luck

Depends which bone you break. Mine was the one in the middle which made it easier since it is kept in place. The bone on the opp side of the thumb is the worst t break.

I thought I had sprained my wrist and rode for another hour. Got it xrayed 3 weeks later then 8 weeks off so missed 11 weeks last year from May onwards. Damn it all. First time out again was amazing. Worth getting a wrist protector.

Broke mine a year ago, same place as 2hottie’s injury, and still getting a bit of pain if I overuse it. Was out on an all-day ride last week & it was stiff next day, been building today & it’s aching a bit, but nothing like it was even 3 months ago.

I heard mixed opinions about using a wrist brace when riding, but my own experience was that it was beneficial, reduced the movement in the joint when mtbing and allowed me to keep control over roots and rocks without getting my wrist jarred. That was 2 or 3 months after getting the cast off though, wouldn’t have even contemplated it any earlier.

Hope yours heals well & quick.

id say use the turbo if your desperate, but stay off the bike, if you fall it will just take longer.
killer having it happening at this time of year, when things are just starting to heat up.
