I'm going to ride the Gran Fondo Sportful at Feltre in Italy in June. Should I consider taking our some insurance just in-case I do come-off and hurt myself? Anyone got any experience of this?
    Cheers

    Yes, no brainer!

I used Snowcard. As well as getting you home and paying costs, it covers mountain/helicoptor rescue as well I think.

My brother came off in the Alps, nearly went off the side of the mountain but luckily he stopped before the edge. Still bent his forks though. He hadn't bothered with his insurance, bet my parents would have been over the moon if he'd collected a huge medical bill. (He didn't, just got back on the bike luckily!)

    Yes, yes and yes.

My broken back in the Alps resulted in a total bill of close to £40,000. Fortunately, I was insured.

    Would recommend Snowcard, as above.

Is the insurance you get if you join the BCF any use?

Yes but you'd have to get travel insurance as well anyway to cover things like flight disruption, lost luggage etc, the BC insurance will cover you for 3rd party liability if you get knocked off by a driver though, and personal accident if you've got Gold membership. BC can sort out travel insurance as well: link HERE

As above, it's a no brainer, my insurance co (Direct Line) paid out about £30,000 for helicopter rescue, hospital treatment and a private flight home for me a few years ago.

definitely. Unlike others I dont know the total cost of my accident in morzine (my 2nd needing medical attention out there in 3 yrs). What I do know is I had surgery, 3 days in a private clinic on lake geneva, ambulance right up to the plane, an entire row of seats on the plane, and an executive taxi home from the airport. Only had to pay someup front costs most of which was claimed back.

Mine came as part of an employer-provided policy but if we didnt have that I'd get something in its place. A helicopter rescue alone is typically in the thousands.

My only '09 morzine pics (crashed first ride first day 🙄

Do we no longer have reciprocal arrangements all over Europe?????

I certainly don't bother with insurance – never have and never will.

reciprocal arrangements will cover your medical bills. The worst case scenario is you have to wait abroad until you are fit enough to travel home by ordinary means as bringing you home as a medical case is very expensive.

Get an E111 or what ever its called now. Your E111 will cover most things in a european hospital but not everything, mainly the basic medical care, drugs stitches x rays etc. You will need to pay for any ambulance journeys and scans that you may need to have and if you need to be flown home in special circumstances. So its always good to get some insurance.

I know this as i had a slight altercation with a bridge and a ravine last summer in verbier. If it wasn't for the crazy weather the bill would have been very expensive as i would have got a ride in a helicopter, instead i got to go in a 4×4 followed by a normal ambulance which cost about £500. I also had a few scans which were also expensive so once the bills arrived at home i was happy to hand them over to snowcard to sort out the paper work and importantly pay the bills.

As others have said snowcard are great as they specialise in outdoor pursuits type of holiday insurance and £30 for a weeks cover is pretty good i think.

currently looking into getting additional insurance myself.

has anyone used the Sports Cover Direct Top Up Insurance here. I have an existing travel policy with my bank account who dont covering moutain biking and this appears ideal.

    Any comments?

I had family cover with my wifes Halifax account which covered me for 3 days in a private hospital and surgery on my knee in Tenerife last year. Dread to think what it would have cost without. Deffo worth getting insurance i think

I used Dog Tag and they were very good, covered me for the Mega. People were being lifted off the mountain all week by helicopter and I don't think that can be cheap….
