  • Registering a birth in a different area to that where a child is born.

Anyone had to do this recently?

(I have to ring the council back later to talk about a “declaration”.)

We’re in Brizzle but dd was born in Lincoln. Going back to Lincoln to register him would be a bit of a schlep. Any idea what documents we need to bring? The list on the council website seems to imply we don’t need anything specific. But I’m finding this hard to believe.

    https://www.gov.uk/register-birth/overview

Information you need when registering a birth

When registering the birth, you should know:

place and date of the birth
name, surname and sex of the baby
    parents’ names, surnames and address
places and dates of parents’ birth
date of parents’ marriage or civil partnership
    parents’ jobs
    mother’s maiden surname
You might not need to give all of this information, depending on who is registering the birth. You don’t need to take any documents with you to register a birth.

We had difficulty tracking down the post mans details, but once we got that sorted it was fine.

we did, and IIRC we just had to go to the main register office rather than one of the smaller ones in town (Leeds). I can’t remember much else though, it was 2.5 years ago and I was in a post natal fug 😆

I’d phone up the Regestry Office and check. IIRC you need to take the paperwork that the hospital gave you and some proof of your own ID.

I could be wrong though. It has been 3 years and we are programmed to erase memories like this. I have no idea what went on in the first year of the lives of either of my kids.

We did. Born in North Yorkshire, registered in West Yorkshire. Didn’t take owt with us, but the registrar sent the paper work away rather than giving it to us there and then. We did it in the local registry office as well.

I have nothing useful to add, but my amazing claim to fame is that, if you look at the register of births for the High Peak district and look all the way back to 1974 and find the very first entry on the register, it will be for one Simon Michael Massey. Me 🙂

Thinking about it now, Junior 2 was born in Dundee but registered in Perth. I can’t remember there being anything different from Junior 1 who was born and registered in Perth.

DD – just bear in mind – you, the father, will not be able to register the birth alone AFAIK if you’re not married, unless you have a signed consent from the mother. If you’re married then it’s ok.

The mother does not need such consent if you’re not married, and doesn’t even need to put you down as the father!

    Congrats 🙂

Few minutes earlier and it would have been “kitchen entrance of the Royal United Hospital,” apparently.

Poor child. When he grows up and inherits his father’s passion for Irish rugby, he’ll forever be called a plastic, just because of where the porr little mite was born!

Oh, the inhumanity of it all!

We already purée some and stir it in with the milk for the evening feed. Helps him sleep better. 🙂
