Lagavulin – if you can find it that cheap

or 2 bottles of the 12y.o. speyside whiskey 'Ben Bracken' in Lidl

Ben Bracken is indeed a 12 year old Speyside malt, called Tamnavulin. Tamnavulin distillery closed down about 5 years ago and Whyte & Mackay Ltd the former owners of Tamnavulin sold a load of casks of Tamnavulin to Lidl supermarket and they now sell it under the name "Ben Bracken".

If you like malts such as Glen Deveron, Glenlivet, Tormore or Glen Ord then you will probably like this.

I wasn't very impressed with Glenmorangie Nectar D'or.

However Aberlour A'bunadh is fantastic and within your budget.

Oddbins have it for £35. Waitrose have it even cheaper.

Nick – I went on a tasting day in Cairngorm a while back with Benromach and was well impressed. They have 4 versions – I reckon the peaty one is about as good as it gets…. You up for a ride ? I'm just about back to normal fitness now !

It is of course very personal, but Ian Banks wrote a book called Raw Spirit in which he goes on a road trip to find the best whisky in Scotland which is on general sale – no "100 year old stored in a crystal bottle in a cellar encased in peat" at £100000 a bottle stuff. His conclusion was the Glenfiddich 18 year old was the best you could get.

Lagavulin 16 is £29 at costco. Classy malt – most whisky drinkers would enjoy this I reckon – doesn't have the medicinal kick of some islays.

Really? Normal Glenfiddich to me tastes pretty poor. I assume the 18 year old is better. Can't beat a nice bottle of Laphroaig IMO.

I think it was one of the special editions.

Ah yes. Google says: Glenfiddich Havana Reserve 21 Year Old Scotch Whisky
    About £70 a bottle.

The 12y.o. highland park is lovely, 18y.o. is not worth the extra money tbh
