I have two lads 5 and 8 in need of bigger bikes, anybody know if there’s any deals on at the moment? Was thinking something like a carrera blast? Cheers.

#1 (age 9) son has a Spesh 24″ Hotrock – ace bit of kit and not too heavy, even with sus forks. He’s had it for a year or so.
#2 (age 7) son has Cube Team 20, which was ahandme down from #1 but is a great bike – strong, not too heavy.
#1 (age 5) daughter was using the boys old Spesh 16″ Hotrock (?) but prefers pink and has something else now.
I looked at all sorts but went for the Cube and Specialised because they were not too heavy and had reasonable kit on them. I expect the Cube to be good for daughter aswell, so it has been good value for me.

Carerra blasts are pretty decent and great vfm but have you emailed Orange before you make the mistake of excluding your own kids from the sweary club vids/rides?

Spesh and Scott do v good kids bikes if you wanna spend more.
I’d prob avoid Isla if they take after dad 😉

Islabikes is the usual STW response, but they don’t come cheap. We have two, but bigger one picked up S/H.
I had a good look at a Carrera Blast & have to say I would happily buy my lads one. If they ditched the sus fork they would weigh the same as the Islabike equivalents.

I’d go so far as to steer away from Isla, they are more racey and only lighter than others because of ridig forks and light tyres.
My kids were not impressed compared to the Spec Hotrock and they look a little geeky.

I’ve had Spec, Trek, Ridgeback and Giant kids bikes for my clan and all are good solid kit and not too heavy.

Best is to get onto the classifieds here or gumtree locally and pick up some great bargains.

I have a spes hot rock 20 that needs a bit of work on the drive train ( new cassette / chain, or maybe just a few links from the chain removed). It’s seen some use so not cosmetically pristine. £50 picked up Bradford if you are interested.

I despair at people sometimes! who ever trained-taught their kids to ride like that at that age needs to be hung drawn and quartered!

Safe riding for kids is of the upmost importance till later on i say, despicable!

a practical bike is all that is required.

That’s a top video. How much did you have to shout at them before their technique got that good?

Haha! Cheers Martin. Eldest lad doesn’t listen to me no matter how much I try teach him! 😆
So i just let him got on with it, he doesn’t do too bad, but they need bigger bikes now so I think second hands guna be my best bet now. Cheers all.

    BMX….I said BMX.
Kids wont ride on rough trail (stuff with hills)until at least 12 or older…not much at any rate. But a BMX gives them the exact bike they will want when you get the flashy new bike park in your home town and they can still rag it round the streets with all their mates without flippin gears muddling matters. Mine had an Islabike which was a lovely bike but in the hands of an 8 year old who does skids and chucks it on the floor outside every shop gets pretty tatty, he ended up snapping the frame at Chicksands so got a BMX and never looked back.

Nothing to add other than your two lads look very handy on their bikes, you must be very proud of them.

Madbillmcmad and salsa I’m living in Huddersfield and I’ll keep u in mind, cheers.
Donks, I know exactly what yer saying and thats why I got them both bmx to start with, but thinking eldest needs and wants to start doing more offroad, but yeh I want to keep it light and nimble for him to get the most out of it.

Shagmeister I take it you are the parent then?
You should be providing suitable armour and reflective garments for them to wear, and also cone off the areas where they are riding so no other riders hit them!

Donks – not sure what you mean, my 10 and 12 yr girls have been wanting to ride more and more off road for the past 3 years. Being local to Glentress – that is their favourite and we regurlarly do bits of the blue / red there. A decent MTB with low gears (little ring) and a bit of front suspension is a must.

Disagree with Chris’s comment on suspension unless you are made of money.

I stuck my old project 2’s on my son’s Kona as the forks that came with it were useless & weighed a ton – made a much better bike for him (They are back on my kona now).
