As above – after a series of disappointing reads, I imagine a Bond novel could be an easy and fun read.

Bonus points if its free for an ebook!

All of them. Particularly You Only Live Twice and Moonraker.

none are that long, very compact writing style, all are consistent quality

you could do some sneaky googling and get ebooks from a torrent site – I did this for an electronic copy of the spy who came in from the cold because I gave away my paper copy and wanted to read it again

Dr No. Diamonds are forever. Or any of them really. Enjoy the product placement that would shame any modern movie and despair at the racism and sexism.
And a fair bit of religious intolerance and homophobia.

    Products of their time.

All of them are very good. Don’t be expecting roger moore though. Craig and darker.

    Casino Royal was my favourite.

Moonraker is my favourite, but read them in order.

I think the John Gardner (Amis?) stuff isn’t bad either…

Edit: as above, prepare for some homophobia/racism that detracts somewhat from it (I can’t whistle).

None of them are exactly great works of literature but make quite interesting reading given how popular the films are. If it wasn’t for the films though nobody would remember the books. He wasn’t a brilliant writer by any means.

That said, I’ve read them all. In order as I’m very OCD that way! Goldfinger is probably the best of the bunch.

And ignore the PC whinging about how racist and sexist they are. Fleming was just a man of his time. He wrote it as he saw it.

Even at the time, Bond was a nasty bugger.

Having read a few comments on here I just went back and flicked through Moonraker again. And as folk say, it is one of the best. Definitely nothing like the film.

They are all right nothing special – if you want to read good books of that genre I would recommend Eric Ambler or, less spy like, but essential Graham Greene.

Mickey Spillane – Mike Hammer, Leslie Charteris – saint novels, couldn’t get enough of it back when I was reading Bond novels, mind you I had the mental age of a fifteen year old – not the sixteen year old i am now.
