Why do they need reamed? Where in Ayrshire are you?

I’m in troon. The bushes both need replacing and the metal inside the actual shock is really warped.

*waves* I’m in prestwick, if it’s the shock I’d be tempted to send it to the like of tft or loco, can’t really think of anyone in the shire that would do that tbh. Possibly the likes of willy bain in Glasgow, or maybe billy bilsland.

Bikelove? I think Carl does that, up Garscube road in the units before Maryhill Road.

Willy Bain on the south side (Pollockshaws Road) is a workshop only and carries enough stuff that he may well be able to do it.

No idea on Ayrshire, tbh you will be lucky to find anywhere, Carrick Cycles in Ayr maybe but aside from that your guess is as good as mine. Plenty of showrooms but no idea on spannering.

    no idea on spannering

Plenty good mechanics in Ayrshire, but that would be more suited to an old fashioned repair shop. If the shock is warped/worn, then I’m not sure that reaming would do any good. Probably be better to drill out then bond or press in a bushing.

Yeah, my experience has been more on the Leisure Plus side of things (for those who know Troon from several years back) but I knew Carrick had a few enthusiastic folk working there a few years ago.

It wasn’t a dig at the shops BTW, I just imagine that for the amount of demand it’s probably not worth offering once you tool up and keep parts.

Any Ayrshire recommendations then? I’m in Largs so Glasgow ends up being the usual choice :/

As you say, the boys at carrick are good, as are ACS in prestwick, Craig in particular. The boys in sprockets are pretty decent, and Neil at walkers is a good wheel builder. I don’t know what Irvine cycles is like these days. I tend to do pretty much everything myself these days, so maybe I ain’t the best to ask.

The guy in Saltcoats seems a decent mechanic, but there’s usually a load of **** in his shop.

Unfortunately no joy with fitting new bushing in either acs or carrick…. Anyone know of places further afield over to glasgow that can do it…..really don’t want to have to send my shock to mojo.

I’ve used Bain Engineering Ltd in Blanefield several times for bike related specialist engineering / machining. He’s got a machine shop full of top notch machinery inc lots of the old stuff that will still be working by the time I’m pushing the daisies up.

He’s an ex-rolls royce machinist and knows his stuff….good reasonable prices too.

Are you sure you dont just need to replace the shock eyelet bush?
Its a bit like a hula hoop that is pressed into the shock eye.
It is designed to wear so the shock isn’t knackered but bushing wear?
Got any pics of the offending item and the bit that needs reaming?

Flotec? Never used them personally though so no idea what they are like. A bit further afield than Glasgow mind. The good Ayrshire fix is a bit of leccy tape and squeeze it in…you know who you are 😆

I’m still confused about what you need done. Is it just a bush change? Or have you damaged the eyelet and need it opened out to a larger size?

I wonder if the OP is getting his mounting hardware and eyelt bushings confused.

The mounting hardware are the outer silver bits, which space the shock to the frame and fit through the grey central bit.
The grey central bit is the shock eyelet bushing.

Shown in the pic above already pressed into the shock eyelet.

Ahhhhh, ys, that’s the part I need replacing.
Appologies for the confusion, yes it’s the bit in the last pic.
It is the shock eyelet bushing that needs replacing!
    Anywhere near that does it?

you can buy the tools from the likes or TF Tuned, Mojo or ebay for very little, and a little for the bushes (worth getting known good ones) and do it yourself – takes very little time/skill/effort

This could well get very expensive very quickly……here goes…..
How little skill does it require? Vice and a bit a muscle?
Any idea of a good make?
And what good makes for the bushes?…..

Any idea what the tool is called before I start investigating?

Bag of ten eyelet bushings from Katec bushings for about 15 quid, handy if mates need some,or 2 quid a pop if buying singles,a friend of mine got a wee tool made for taking out, putting in eyelet bushings, threaded rod, some nuts and a steel top hat type thing that you screw in to remove bushing and turn the other way to fit the bushing,5 minute job,and im no way bike mechanical minded

BETD do their Hula Hoop bushes which I recommend, IIRC if you buy the mounting hardware they usually include one with it.

BETD will also sell the bushing tool, job done. (BETD version just needs a mallet to hit it with)

Just bought the tool and the bushings.
Looked up on you tube how to do it.
