On the contrary, the space is occupied by the haptic engine that gives the ‘click’ sensation when the Home button is pressed.
Drilling a hole there renders the phone pretty much unusable.

Another entertaining fact – they’ve added a row of small holes (a speaker grill) where the headphone jack was, as if there’s another speaker under there. But there isn’t, it’s purely for aesthetics.
