  • REALLY! annoying things in computer games? :-(

i just had to get them off me chest 😳 (am playing project gotham racing 2 atm, that’s where no 1 came from).

1.computer drivers who will happily sideswipe/spin you off because their programming isn’t advanced enough to give way when YOU have the racing line (are in front 😡 to my shame i’m not good enough to attempt gold/platinum medals 😳

2.rpg’s where you are constantly sent back/forth collecting a to give to b e.t.c 😡

3.in same r.p.g’s (am not thinking of you morrowind e.t.c 😉 you can pick almost any lock BUT there are still some locks that you cannot pick (or cast a high level unlock spell on 😕

4.r.p.g’s like skyrim e.t.c (when i had them). there are certain characters you just cannot kill no matter what 😮 (those annoying children in skyrim for example (i’d like to add that i don’t condone harming a child by the way 😉 but those kids in skyrim are just asking for a fireball spell 😉

feel free to add your gaming gripes to the list 😉

I was often puzzled as to why insects in RPGs frequently carry jewellery. Then this explained it:

Resident Evil- collect the diamond key, go back across the city to open the diamond door, you found the club key! Go back across the city…

It’s all just padding. “Over 1000 hours gameplay” it says on the box. 90% of that is spent walking to the shops to turn those wolf pelts into gold coins so you can buy the shit you wanted in the first place.

Yep, locked doors that need a key when it’s obvious a boot would do.

Cut-out scenes where your character gets effortlessly lifted by the bad guys despite the fact you’ve been an all conquering ninja up to that point. (Far Cry 3)

On rails elements in open world games. (Far Cry 3)

    Pointless collectibles. (Far Cry 3)

If anyone can guess which game I’ve bought and been disappointed with recently I’ll be impressed…!

Call of duty, Planetside etc walk out of a building and get your brains blown out by someone you never even knew existed. Why I don’t play these games now.

Racing games online. People (usually an American) who complains that you ran into them and starts swearing despite being in the right place and braking in the correct place but they just run into you and crash.

PC ports that still say “Press the right analogue stick” or similiar

Playing Xcom just now, and I got properly furious at it last night… My super-mega-elite anti-alien commandos run up behind a car and take cover. Some distance away, an alien appears. My sniper raises his rifle, takes careful aim… and shoots the car he’s hiding behind! Which then catches fire, and explodes, killing them both.

I’d be of limited use in a skirmish with aliens, but I’m pretty sure I can manage to avoid shooting a car 6 inches away from me, with a rifle that’s 8 feet long.

    Unskippable cutscenes.

Really annoying on a first playthrough, absolutely unforgivable on subsequent ones.

Playing games on machines with gigabytes of memory that have a tiny playing area and little or no imagination has gone into making the play environment interesting.

If they could pack an entire galaxy, complete with stars, planets, space stations and even working clocks on the church towers in all the little towns into less than 500kb of code for Frontier, then I expect a little more thought going into an entire DVD of game.

Ooh, and my personal favourite, years after Half-life two nailed facial modelling and physical expressions during conversational moments, games that still make characters look like they’re acting in a 70’s dubbed kung-fu movie whilst having a stroke.

I’m looking at you Deus-Ex: HR

    Or do both.

Unskippable cut scenes annoy the hell out of me. Oh, and EA’s servers.

    Slow loading/poorly designed menus.

I’m particularly thinking of Gran Turismo 5 for this.

Start the game, wait for it to load. Click Main Game, wait for it to load. Open garage, wait for it to load. CHoose a car, wait for main game menu to load again. Start a race, wait for it to load. Click the green icon, wait for it to load.

Finally drive. Hmm this car is a bit slow for this race. Now you need to exit the race, back to race menu, wait for it to load, back to main game menu, wait for it to load, ….

I’m not a gamer and this probably doesn’t count but I got at least mildly annoyed when I was playing Wii Lego LOTR today…I had spent half an hour getting to almost the end of a level…and then it got stuck so I had to reset the console and start again! Although I did at least do it a bit faster the second time round!

I love the Lego games, but they do seem to do that occasionally.

More odd was in the early stages of the Harry Potter one a brick was missing, no matter what I did, where I went or how many times I tried to start the level again it wouldn’t appear. Started the whole thing again (as it was only the early stages) and there it was…no idea what could cause that!

Getting the high score and being transported to the other side of the galaxy to be the last hope in an epic battle against a technologically advanced form of mouthbreather, win the heart of the princess and safeguard the future of our species until we are finally ready to meet people from other stars. Really annoying on a first playthrough, absolutely unforgivable on subsequent ones. And rather time consuming.

when fighting an end of level baddies requires a particular button to press. not physically, but metaphorically. You have to work out when its eye closes you have 5 seconds to fire missiles at the blue spot on its chest.

    What’s the point in that?

Escort quests, especially if you’re supposed to be protecting someone who is a) useless, and b) really, really annoying, to the point you’d quite happily kill them yourself. Yes, Ashley from Resident Evil 4, I’m looking at you.

I also couldn’t play Ico for that reason as well. Lovely graphics and atmosphere, but I found the controls clunky and Yorda irritating.

Games that have difficulty walls rather than curves. I don’t mind a game getting progressively tougher, I actively enjoy that. What I don’t like is comfortably sailing through a game to be suddenly faced with a scenario that is suddenly nigh on impossible. I’m old and cranky, and don’t have the patience of my younger days. *grumble*

Boss fights. Never been a fan.

    Quicktime events. Goddamn hate them.

    Spoiler

End of Halo 4, final bad guy, walk up to him, press right shoulder button to kill. After all that shooting, driving, flying and more shooting I can kill the bad guy with one button? By pressing it once? Not cool.

Edit, also escort missions. Well reminded.

I’m particularly thinking of Gran Turismo 5 for this.

Jesus, GT5 was brutal for that. Assuming car changes were needed, I always found myself lucky if I could get through more than three races an hour once you got past the easy 2-3 lappers just because of load times.

Also GT5, the bloody long boring races. I’m not even talking about the endurance ones, but 15-20 lap ones. The difficulty rarely goes up so it’s just 1 lap of racing followed by 14 cruising to victory. Something’s wrong when you’re near the end of the game but you’re under car-ing yourself drastically or giving them a headstart.

Oh and GT5’s inconsistent time penalty for bumping AI cars (online fair enough) but feels a bit game policing and when you’re pushing the limits on one of those rare difficult races and you misjudge and tap the car in front, it’s bloody annoying as the tap has already cost you anyway.

    GT5 was sh*t btw.

    Escort Missions! 👿

Why is it whilst you’re quietly creeping behind enemy lines, the person you’re escorting always wanders around like a lost child. “don’t go there! Follow me! Oh FFS run, run, run!” (cue crap AI that can’t run)

Or as above but in Real time strategy games, the AI vehicle being escorted is always slow and manages to get stuck, just at the moment you need to get away.

Also in RTS games that unit that took all your resources and 1 hour to make, turns out to be painfully slow and when it doesn’t finally fire at something it misses and takes half the game to recharge.

After a break from some report writing I’d like to add the good old ‘dear god where are they all coming from, I’ve killed hundreds, ran out of ammo and started a crazed sprint into their faces to beat them using my now useless gun as a club, for the love of god…’ Ah yes. You just step over that invisible line in the sand and no more reinforcements.

Also, Crysis 2. All of it.

Online gamers who talk about kill/death ratios.

Glitchy online games and camping snipers who’d sit in a glitch and couldn’t be shot (why I stopped playing COD).
