Just watching adverts, don’t know why, but it struck me that the representation of minorities in advertising is totally skewed. You can imagine the scenario, a group of friends or people in an advert, mostly they will be white with one or two black faces (African/carribean) Or witness the recent addition of a black person in the carlsberg adverts.

My question is, where are the Asian and especially oriental faces. It seems that the idea of appeasing diversity standards is to add a black face. Yet as races go, blacks have a much lower disposable income per head than Asian, more likely Indian, and oriental people, who have the highest per capita income on average yet how often are oriental people seen on tv. Asian/Indian people are the largest ethnic minority in the uk and hardly ever appear in adverts.

Is it just a case of he who shouts loudest..?

They’re not selling to black people, though.

They’re aspirational adverts aimed at white people with repressed racist tendencies who want to have healthier social relationships and fewer social hang ups.

Easy, fun interactions with black people exemplify this angst-free existence and freedom from prejudicial constraints, thereby encouraging good associations with the product.

    Or what?
