If you were putting up a shelf in your garage that wasn’t going to take much load, would you mount the brackets in mortar or avoid like the plague?

Why mortar? If you have to drill you may as well drill into brick/block?

Avoid mortar. Shelves get loaded up over the years.

i cant work out what the reasons for mounting in mortar would be ….

mortar crumbles at the best of times – the last thing it needs is a hole in it ….

Depends what the garage is made of but usually use anchor bolts because as globalti wisely said

Shelves get loaded up over the years.

I have had problems with using anchor bolts in blocks. I never seem to be able to get a balance between a solid fixing and just breaking the block when I tighten the bolt.

May be just because I am pretty handless mind!

The prev owner has drilled mortar in a number of places and I didn’t know why, didn’t seem the best idea to me so I thought I’d check with the collective. Thanks all.
