Opened this thread just in time, popped out the patio doors and had a perfect view of it passing over the top of the house, thanks for the PSA

Best psa in ages. Just got both kids out of bed, and they were actually very impressed. Nice one.

Yep, think I saw it too, directly overhead, moving fast W-E.

Allthepies link suggests it comes back in a couple of hours, and keeps coming back over the next few days including another decent period a bit earlier tomorrow. Is this a current hotspot of activity then or is it ‘normal’ – and yes i realise clear skies as well is a big benefit – worth keeping the kids up for.

Why’s it so bright – is it lit or is that reflection or what?

There is a slightly low but very bright light in the sky. Is that it? Not sure…

    😈

You had to look straight up. Even pissed lying in the gutter you’d have seen it 😛

Edit – and of course the directions in the image would only apply if you live where I do – sorry 😳

OK, looked it up and it seems it is around for a few nights now.

And it’s reflecting the sun, not solarstorm. Or even a pair of Trouteyes.

Yup it almost had a glow and was fast! Saw a plane going the other way blinking and clearly a plane.

Question. I want a telescope for me and junior. What to get??

Missed it, but apparently it’s visible tonight too, assuming a clear sky again.

8:51pm for 6mins with the location info put in as Peterborough.

Might take the camera out and stick it on a long exposure….

Geoff J – what app is that? Is there an Android version?

Fast ? Not really*. I’d call a shooting star fast. The ISS was visible for 4 minutes at the 21:44 pass. As someone up there said, it’s like a bright satellite (funny that 😉 ).

    * yes I know it’s moving at 7km/s 🙂

    This – https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/iss-spotter/id523486350?mt=8

There’s something that looks similar for Android here – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runar.issdetector&hl=en_GB

caught it briefly with bino’s last night. Will get the telescope out tonight and see if I can get a closer look.

I’ve had people try to convince me that it’s sunlight reflecting off the solar panels 😉

Must go check out some Iridium flares as well. Even brighter than ISS, but only for a very short duration.

Scared the shit out of me when one of those flashed across the view when I was painstakingly trying to observe the Leo triplet.

they can be very very bright if you’re in exactly the right place at the right time

Ok this isnt it Not moving fast

Very bright object low in the southern sky at 9-10 last night would have been Sirius, brightest (in terms of apparent magnitude) star in the [edit]NIGHT[/edit] sky.

excluding the Sun, of course 😉 (although you probably won’t see that at night)
