What happens when you put an 11sp cassette on a 10s freehub?

Only I thought my freehub was 11sp, so removed 10sp cassette and spacer and fitted 11sp cassette. Only to find the cogs are a bit loose and I can’t get it to tighten up properly.

If it is Shimano stuff, you can’t put al the sprockets from an 11 speed cassette onto a 10 speed body, it’s too wide to fit on.

It doesn’t go far enough on so you can’t get the lockring to engage and thus tighten.

Unless… it’s a Mavic cassette, with their rather odd (or very lucky) foresight, the fact you’ve needed an extra spacer on there meant that taking it off gives you an 11 speed freehub body.

is it Shimano ? If your cassette is 10 speed and your freehub actually is 11, then there will be 2 spacers. AFAIK if you then put on an 11 speed cassette you would still need the thin spacer…

If it is a Shimano 11 speed body and cassette then you don’t need any spacers.

I thought initially it was a 10sp hub – but when I took the cassette off I found a spacer inboard.

So I fitted the 11sp cassette without the spacer – and when on it might have been overhanging 1mm or 2mm, but I thought that might “nip up”.

Lockring engages and tightens OK, but cogs are a bit loose.

Mmmm, no spacers should be required at all. 10 speed cassettes come with thin spacer, but not 11 speed ones.

If it’s Mavic, no problem. If it’s Shimano, you can leave a sprocket off and run it as a 10 speed only with appropriate limit screw adjustment.

Got one spacer, which is 2 or 3mm thick.

I wasn’t expecting to find any when I took the 10sp cassette off, hence my confusion.

I am moving the wheels from my old 10sp bike to new 11sp bike BTW.

My error re the thin spacer, sorry.

The penny may just have dropped.

The spacer was probably to run a 10 speed cassette on a 9/10 hub.

I didn’t realise 9 speed cassettes are actually wider.
