I have had this idea now for a while of a "touch the water" tour. the plan is to touch the water of all 16 of the major lakes (not counting tarns) in the lake district (off road of course) over 3 or 4 days
Any one done anything like this, am i reinventing the wheel here.

Joss Naylor ran them in 17 and a bit hours. The route's in his book. Footpaths mind.
Sounds like a top idea to me, who cares if it's original or not, if you have not done it it's original to you and that is all that matters.
We once did: Newby Bridge, Ings, Kentmere, Stile End, Sadgill, Mosedale, Alston, Moor Divock, Pooley Br, Watermillock (camp first night)
Old Coach Road, Threlkeld, Skiddaw House, Whitewater Dash, Bassenthwaite, Whinlatter, Loweswater, Floutern Tarn (camp near Ennerdale Bridge)
Swarth Fell, Worm Gill, Nether Wasdale, Miterdale, Eskdale, Muncaster Fell, Devoke Water, and unsurprisingly I can't remember how we got back to Newby!

This was long before I did that stuff, 1997/8 I think 
About 40 miles a day I think.

If I remember correctly...ahem cough (pub quiz time)....Bassenthwaite is the only Lake in Cumbria! 
all the rest are tarns/waters or meres!.

Bassenthwaite is the only one with Lake in its name. The Meres and Waters are still lakes.
